NoJoMo 13: Temptation
Busy Saturday. Did not wake up until 8:20 and about 10 minutes later realized that the kids were not even awake and that we had about 45 minutes to get breakfast, dressed and packed to go to Emma’s handball match. So up and scarfing down breakfast (three slices of bread, one with liver pate (huge here. Sorta like braunschweiger but not as smooth and with herbs and stuff. Here is the Wiki article on leverpostei (liver pate) which is what we eat here), one with roast beef and one with brown cheese and raspberry jam. And coffee, must have coffee. The kids had crackers with salami (Sara) and jam (Emma). You might have seen the type of crackers here. I see them in the grocery stores over there. The brand is Wasa.
So we were off to the handball match, driven there by our neighbor who’s daughter is in Emma’s class and on Emma’s team. They lost both matches. Their coach is the big sister of one of the other kids on the team and she is maybe 17 or so. She is way too disengaged like some teens are and the problem with Emma’s team is they aren’t aggressive or excited or driven at all. They could use a better coach. After the matches and after buying waffles on the way out. (Waffles here are different in that they are thinner, heart shaped and served as deserts or snacks with jam or the above mentioned brown cheese, although my father-in-law really likes maple syrup, otherwise fairly rare here. Wiki link, scroll down to Scandinavian style waffles)
Home for hotdogs (and just for fun, since this is kind of a day in the life pointing out interesting differences, did you know that we still have a great number of hot dogs and weiners sold in casings and strung together? I am not sure you can even get those in the States unless you go to a butcher (and precious few of those anymore other than at the grocery store). They are fabulous.) for lunch and then packing up to take the girls swimming at my work, which we can use all weekend if we want. Agnes, Emma’s friend, came with us. The Wife is studying for her exam in a few weeks so giving her a day without kids.
Swimming was fine, kids had a blast, until Agnes fell. I was being stood on in the water by Sara so I didn’t see it but she was wailing and Emma helped her out of the water. I swam over and figured out that she slipped on the edge, landed on her ass and then slid into the water. She started to stand up and Emma says Agnes is bleeding and sure enough she has a bit of blood pooling under her ass, which was actually rather alarming. I asked Agnes to stand up, grabbed a towel and then asked her if it was OK if we pulled the back of her bikini bottoms down so I could at least find out where the blood was coming from. She had a tiny cut in between her butt cheeks that was bleeding. A towel for a minute or so stopped that, but that was it for swimming.
After showers and stuff we headed over to the library to return some books and find some new ones. We were late so I had to pay a fine (around 12 bucks) but of course they don’t take cards and I have no cash and they said I can’t check anything out until I pay the fine so I left the girls at the library (which is actually in a shopping center) to go to the ATM. It was also video game day at the library (???) so the girls were playing Wii bowling. Got that all sorted, found some books and off to the grocery store.
Bought all that we needed including Kinder eggs, which are chocolate hollow eggs that have a plastic container inside holding a little toy that you usually have to put together. Interestingly, at the link there, I find out that the reason I had never seen these before coming here is that they are illegal in the US because of some law passed in 1938 saying that you can’t put non-food items inside candy. Emma needed some of those containers, if possible, for school on Monday. Making something I guess. Also bought Doritos, which they started selling here a few months ago and they are now everywhere.
When we got home I made hamburgers, which were awesome.
After that I cleaned the kitchen and then made brownies (no link, we all know what brownies are. Same here as there.). And after that I drove the lovely Mrs. Zaphod to a birthday party for someone in her Flickr Bergen group. Came back here to the house. cleaned a bit more (but not that much as tomorrow is Sunday and we have no plans) and got the kids off to bed, even though they spent the next 2 hours in and out and yelling for me and needing this and that until finally going down at 10:40 (it’s the weekend so whatever). Meanwhile I have been watching the NFL game from Thursday night and enjoying this:
And that was Saturday.
Videos!
Continuing on the 80’s timeline. One of the other bands that got me after Numan was Ultravox. And my appreciation for them is even greater now than it was back then. This is possibly my favorite song by them, The Voice.
Of course there was also Depeche Mode. I saw them when I lived in Los Angeles in the Rose Bowl with 100,000 of my best friends. It was awesome. This is one of my favorite early songs by them, Leave in Silence.
And of course New Order. God, I love them. I don’t really know what most New Order fans think is their best song, but to my taste this is the finest thing they ever did. Temptation.

Now that’s an entry. I guess I should drink beer and OD more often.

We brought back dozens for Kinder Eggs from Belgium, lol. Then, I went to visit my sister and found them at an international market in Georgia. Figures. Jealous you’ve seen Depeche Mode!

I have eaten brown cheese before! I liked it. (When I ate cheese.) Kinder eggs are the bomb. I so wish they made them here.

Home made hamburgers are the best. Personally I’d prefer that to McDonalds crap any day – rubber food. (although I still do eat Macca’s)
