Trying to move to the Solid State Disk era

My hard drive or rather Windows, started acting up, becoming slow like some fat cat on a sunny afternoon. So I thought I’d upgrade my laptop to use a Solid State Disk, which supposedly is the best laptop upgrade you can make these days. So I happily brought a 256G drive for $200 or so. Then I found I needed to buy a cable and harness to connect the thing. Then I found I have multiple partitions on my old drive and I really only want to copy one, so I went through 4 different types of backup software. I am still working on it, with all these false starts, even on Thanksgiving. But I deserve some slack, since I already spent two nights making food for the ThxGiving party we will be going to later on, I made Indian curry soup called Mulli Gatawny, and a Dutch apple pie with rum, raisins and almond paste. I am quite the domesticated slave (my wife is not convinced).

Newegg has a Black Friday deal on the best way I’ve found to do the transfer. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812161005 The software lets you select which partitions to include or exclude from the old drive. You plug the new drive in via external USB and do the transfer and put the new drive inside and it boots just like before except in 10 or 20 seconds.

Full disclosure: this is the product I used. http://www.amazon.com/Apricorn-Notebook-Upgrade-Connection-ASW-USB-25/dp/B002EUCU3O/ref=sr_1_5 It’s USB 2.0. The kit at the Newegg link is USB 3.0.

That Dutch apple pie sounds pretty good. It’s something to think about when one hears the phrase, “As American as Apple Pie.”

I found this comment on an Intel SSD at Amazon. I was trying to buy a book, but got distracted. “The software to migrate your data from your old drive to the new drive doe not work properly however you can down load a free one from http://www.disk-partition.com/ which works much better.”
