Madeleine Peyroux, Anoushka Shankar concerts

I did do one other thing last night. Right before work let out, I was on the GW Lisner website checking out the Anoushka Shankar concert I plan to attend Sunday night. Then I noticed for the first time that another of my favorite music artists, Madeleine Peyroux, was playing. So last night I quickly asked a metro worker where Lisner was and found out it was just a couple of stops away on the Blue line. That was great, except for the fact that it was raining like crazy and I didn’t have an umbrella. But as doggedly determined as I was to see her concert, I found the place, after asking directions in the Starbucks at GWU’s hospital and grabbing a pumpkin spice latte. I also got a free hunk of banana-nut bread after the woman forgot my order and then made it wrong before finally getting it to me.

I was wearing my new pink and black Tahari suit I’d purchased just a few weeks before when I was filling out my very sparse business wardrobe for the new job. I ran and ran in the rain, trying to shield my purse and the book I was carrying, although it was in vain. My hair was soaked through and by the time I got home, my light pink jacket was spotted with unexplainable stains from food and probably rubbing against the dirty metro seat. But all in all, it was worth it. I had a good time. A doctor of about 60-something sat next to me in the seat, and he and I had a nice conversation both before and here and there throughout the performance. He gave me advice on everything from seeing Boston by way of taking the Eastern shuttle from D.C., to finding local events in D.C. by joining one of the embassies as a “friend of the embassy” or something like that. He told me it was a good way to continue learning about a culture in which I already have some knowledge. With me, it’s mostly French and German since I speak each of the languages fairly moderately. So I may look into that.

I’d also like to find some professional organizations, especially those in the media/marketing/P.R. industry, in the local area. If I can, I may join one.

I’m also looking into booking a ticket for Cirque Du Soleil, since they’re here in town, and I have wanted to see one of their shows for years. But I don’t know. Again, I feel like such a moron going everywhere by myself and it often seems like ‘why bother?’

I think my worst fear is the age thing. I am 34 years old. To me that might as well be 64, for the way I feel. It seems like all of the cool things to do are for younger or either older people. I used to enjoy going to clubs and dancing now and then, but I feel that I might be too old for that, or at least for those clubs on the general club scene in D.C. And anyway, I don’t have anyone to go with. I just feel so left out of the world sometimes. I am so afraid to be older. I’m not done with being young.
