Strange feedback

So, I’m a member of a website called Writers Cafe, where I occasionally submit stories and people can leave reviews.

One story I posted a while ago is called Time And Tide. You can read it here.

I finally got a review of it today. It mentions that the story is obviously influenced by Minority Report, says I should remove the reference to MR, remove the word precog and lessen the likenesses between the two.

Except I’ve never seen the film MR, never read the book (never read and Phillip K Dick at all, which I’ll have to rectify at some time) and only know that MR uses precogs because of the publicity for the film.

So, the question is, what do I do? Do I let the person know this, get hold of the book/film and watch/read so I know what to change, ignore what was said or what?

Any advice welcome.

Will

Oh, I say go ahead and contact the person. I love when people think that they “caught me” doing something. It’s always fun to knock those people down a of couple of pegs. 😉

Any place you would really like going to travel? Anywhere you’d want to move? Are you close to your family?

well, if you’re not going to do anything with it ie. publish it etc. then there’s no harm in leaving it alone. You can’t get sued for it. But it won’t do you any harm to read the book and watch the film. Always does your brain good and broadens your horizons.

I guess if you’ve never seen the film in question, it’s a matter of ‘great minds think alike’… something I’ve been guilty of on occassion. It’s heart breaking to come up with an idea, write five chapters and then realized someone has already published an idea that is too similar to the point where you have to scrap the whole project. I think he’s making the recommendation because he thinks you’re shooting yourself in the foot by making the reference. If you didn’t make note of the film at all, people might not notice the similarity and enjoy the story on its own and get right into it. By referencing the film, you’re making a distraction that takes away from the story… something I don’t think you want to do. Hopefully when you have a moment, you’ll drop by and review my stories. I’m curious to what you think of the one I have titled “God Hates Us All”. Later,

ryn: i must confess, i’ve never read any of his books. To tell you the truth i’m a really big sci-fi fan but i’ve never read a sci-fi book. Actually i’m lieing, i’ve read Timeline. Which if you haven’t read it is fantastic. I’ve seen the film MR. When it 1st came out, it was great. then saw it a 2nd time few years later and thought it was pants. read them all man and tell me what u think.

I read the story and I agree that it has its similarities to MR, however time travel is not a new concept and it is obvious there will be crossover in ideas. Personally I dont think you should mention MR because it adds nothing to your story and makes the reader draw the comparision with MR which is kind of distracting. you dont really explain what a precog is, kind of assuming ive seen MR.

Also, Minority Report did not make up Precog. They just applied the term to characters. (Just as JKRowling’s “spells” are mostly latin words – “lumino” etc).

Well i think the point is that although you havent seen/read MR ur story may just be too much like it. I was half way through writing my book when i read Sabriel and realised that they were too alike. So I changed mine. If you want better sometimes you have to be willing to compromise a little.

Just ignore it unless you really feel compelled to validate yourself to the critic. Example: on a DW story I wrote where Rose is nattering away with her Lahdn accent, someone wrote to say I wasn’t spelling things correctly–“nuffink,” “somefink,” etc. I was tempted to write in caps DIALECT, HELLO!

Sadly, I run into this quite a lot. More than twice now I’ve had a cool idea for a story or novel, and I worked on it for quite a while, only to discover and/or be told that it’s remarkably similar to [such-and-such] or “already done” in [whatever]. I rarely know what to do in such situations. Do I scrap the novel/story? Rewrite it to make it different enough? (What sucks is, sometimes I’ll read the “source material” after the fact, only to discover that they tackled the topic/idea far better than I could have hoped to.) However, in your particular case, the “obviously influenced by” is dead-wrong, and you should defend yourself somehow. Even if it’s “nothing new” (I’m not calling it that, I’m just saying someone might), you can say… well, essentially what you said in this entry, that you’ve neither seen nor read anything by Phillip K. Dick, and therefore were not influenced by his work, or derivatives of his work (e.g., the movie[s].) I’m really curious about the story now, for them to say that. (I’m wondering whether it does seem like an “obvious influence”, or if they’re just being an ass.)

Watching/Reading may be a good idea. Half of knowing what you’re selling is knowing what’s already out there. I haven’t gotten around to reading your story. I know, I suck. I went on the thing with Tony and since being back I just haven’t gotten around to it yet. But I will. Give me a little time. And I can’t honestly think of any questions to ask you at the moment. I’msure I’ll come up with something. I’ll think about it!

Read your story, read the comment, and in all honesty I don’t see how valid the comment is actually. The precogs are the only similarity, and even then it’s not all that huge. I suppose a suggestion is to look at why you’ve referred to the precogs by relating them to MR. The biggest reason is probably so that the reader can get a quick understanding of who the precogs are and what they do. cont…

So if you remove the MR reference, and simply explain them as if MR never existed, it would probably remove that problem. (Maybe this guy only thought of MR because you directly mentioned it?) Also, this would help to clear things up for people who haven’t read/seen MR. I think the only similarities are that both stories are based on beating pre-crime, and they both have precogs, but that’s it.

Okay, now see, if I were to wrongly accuse you of being obviously influenced by something, I would have said Robert Asprin’s “Time Scout” series. Which is a good series of books, btw. I recommend them.

Well, for one thing the BOOK for MR has nearly NOTHING to do with the MOVIE… other than to steal a couple of plot points and ONE character name. Heck, the original book was only about 20 pages long! The reviewer probably watched the film and now thinks they’re an expert on classic literature. Besides, there’s only a couple dozen actual stories TO tell… the rest are details and plot twists. 😉

*reads* Did you put the MR reference in there afterward? It seems out of place. Sure I can see tiny bits from MR, but also Quantum Leap which was just a rehash of Voyagers, which was a rehash of other things… maybe a little DW… of course some Trek, which is just a rehash of Westerns… that’s what happens. Same ideas, new places, people, and so forth. 🙂 Good stuff, by the way! ~Shady
