Melt

My skin still tastes of
your mouth, love. My face still red,
from last night’s bed sheets.

I was out back, trying to smoke away pangs of electricity pulsating throughout my lower back – should have been more careful – when I almost got dive bombed by a cluster of angry birds.

An eye for an eye
makes silken feathers gather
at bipedal feet

Not sure what he did, the bird of prey, but from the sound of them it had to have been deplorable – your sound was anything but. I watched them for a while.

You can’t cherry pick,
kid. We are all animals
We are all wild.

And when he dove head first toward the earth, I held my breath – thought, this is it – oh god, this is it – it is – stop, stop – don’t stop. Waited for him to crash…

But when the world turns
Upside down – we break away –
To hang from bedposts

… and gasped, instead, as he melted into concrete – as he melted into me – and disappeared.

And in that moment
I understood – what it meant –
To be your shadow.
