Bless

Seems like there are still some good people in the world. I went down to the corner market to pick up a few things and when I got back to my van it would not start. Seems the problem was not the battery, I just replaced, after all.
I got one guy to try helping me jump it but it would not and the man said he thought it was that my battery cables needed cleaning and told me I was out of luck on a jump working.
So, with no phone and no idea of what S’s phone number is anyway, I started walking the mile home – already sore from exercising that morning, even if my back and leg problems wouldn’t have been an obstacle on a good day.
About a block and a half from my van, some people I’d tried to get a jump from but missed, saw me walking home and asked what had happened. When I told the guy it looked like the jump wouldn’t work, he insisted on giving me his automatic battery charger – one of those things you keep in your trunk to charge your battery if it goes flat.
I tried to tell him that I didn’t think it would work but he told me to just leave it plugged in for a couple minutes and it would be fine – he was confident of it and insisted I take it.
I went back to my van, dead tired now, almost crippled from walking, plugged the thing into my battery for about three minutes, and it started right up.
People are the angels that the universe (or god, if you like) sends us in our time of need. I make an effort to do good deeds and put good out into the world but sometimes one starts to feel like they’re the only one doing it. This is a reminder that even if you never see your kindness pay off, someone out there is grateful for it.
