Little fires

A woman walks towards the front-door of a house
A plastic bag hangs from one hand, full of objects
Her free hand swings to a handbag hanging from her shoulder
Slender fingers separate the fabric
Push past small objects
Cold, small and metallic
Withdraw
Insert a key into the lock in the door
Torsion
The thunk as the bolt is thrown
Withdraw
Lower the hand to the doorknob
Two fingers curl around the keys
Thumb and two others close around the metal
Application of force
Swing
Step inside the space
Turn
Push the door
The wooden sound of impact
Hand up towards the latch
Torsion
The thunk as the bolt is thrown
Turn
Step through the house
Hall
Kitchen
He is there
Sitting in an armchair
He has moved it to face a window
To his right another room with windows
To his left the glass door inset in the window
The glass door and all of the windows are open
She steps to the bench
Raises the bag
Feels the weight in the muscles of her forearm
Lowers
The tap of the objects making contact with the bench
The other hand raises to her shoulder
Fingers around the keys to clasp the straps of the handbag
Swing
Lower the back to the bench
Continue
The metallic clink of the keys making contact with the bench
Arms to the bag
Separate
She clasps one object
Turns
Step to the fridge
Open
Movement of cold air
The other objects from the bag are in the fridge
She places the object in her hand on the shelf
Thump close
Turn
The empty bag collapsed on the bench
She pans her head
Sees the back of his above the line of the armchair
Shifts her weight
The minute swing of the body
Step
Step again
She moves towards the chair
He turns his head, tilts to look at her
Blink
She sets one two against the heel of her show
Levers the foot out
Repeats the action with the bare foot
Sets one foot against the edge of a shoe
Push
It collides with the other shoe
The dry scrape of the shoes against the floor
Shifting of weight
Lefts one leg
Sets the foot between the man’s thigh and the arm of the chair
He lifts one arm
The woman swings her arm to make contact
Hands clasped
She lowers herself
Lifts her other leg and brings her feet together
Her weight settles down on his thighs
Shoulder down
And fits her head to the curve of his shoulder and neck
Outside the wind moves in the trees
