Work Complaint

I just got an email from my boss’ boss because they’re evaluating everyone’s reported time for the past year. I was missing a few hours in a couple of months, so I probably just forgot to make an entry in the system. I went in and corrected it, but in our conversation she made a remark regarding my time. The report just shows how many hours you are under or over in reporting for the month based on the total business hours in the month. For most months I’m right on with no hours over or under the normal work week hours. She seemed to think that looks suspicious as if I wasn’t recording any time I worked beyond the required amount. Umm, no of course I don’t since (A) I don’t have a laptop and we’re not allowed to connect to the network with our home PC’s and (B) I’m not paid for any overyime I work, so why would I? I carefully balance my hours to make sure I’m not under or over. When I was doing support, sure, I exceeded the normal hours all the time and rarely bothered to record it because no one looked at it anyway. Now they do look at it and I have a job that allows me to put down my work and go home to resume it where I left off the next day. If I need to stay a little later one day to finish something, no problem. I’m a little flexible there, but I compensate for it on another day with a longer lunch or something. I refused to submit to the claim (if it ever comes up) that I’m any less of an employee than someone who works a lot of unpaid overtime. If it makes her feel any better, I could starting putting in the hours I spend at school and on school work in addition to my regular work. That could be an additional 6 to 24 hours per week or 24 to 96 hours every month that I could be over and I won’t look like such an anomaly with 0’s across the board. I started out the day depressed. Now I’m mildly pissed off.

The corporate world would make me want to slit my own throat. I don’t know how you do it.
