Eyebrow piercings first turned up in the 1980s, and have been growing in popularity ever since. They are one of the only purely aesthetic piercings, having no recognized symbolic meaning associated with them.

I came in to work this morning, walked by my boss’ office, said “Good morning.” I sat down at my dark desk. (I don’t turn lights on, so it’s dark until someone else does.) My boss comes over and asks me a question. I turn to answer him and he sees the piercing.

“You’ve got a thing in your eye!” He pauses, turns away to look out the window, masks collecting his thoughts behind little chuckle (I chuckled with him.) Then he goes on without even a hint of reprimand or admonishment in his voice, “I’m not a big fan of body piercing. Ears are one thing, but the rest just seems unnecessary.” He then goes back to the question he came over to ask me. He doesn’t approve it on a personal level, but he knows he can’t do much about it. One down.

I’ll keep updating this entry throughout the day as often as I can.

*Edit (Noon)*

Thankfully, I think people are noticing but keeping their mouths shut. The one guy I’ve been complaining about just noticed (and called it an “eye thing” too.) Apparently he tried a tongue piercing once and said he was surprised it didn’t hurt.

*Last Edit*

Around 1pm a woman I work next to noticed the piercing when I turned to join in their conversation. She abruptly halted the conversation to say, “you got something new,” and ask the guys who sit behind us if they’d noticed. Around 2pm I went to a meeting with my boss and one guy that came in made a big deal about it (not in a bad way, just surprised.) My boss made a remark about it being “a fishing accident,” but he didn’t deliver the joke with much mirth. So that’s it. Time to move on.

I worked in a rather stiff and formal-ish environment when I was at the hosptihell and I have five tattoos. I KNOW everyone thought I was on the eccentric or weird side, but I didn’t care. I have hardly ever cared what anyone thought of me. Your boss will just have to not “be a fan” of piercings.
