Ice

A while back I mentioned that I was throwing out all of my plastic ice cube trays (That BPA thing). I replaced them with a large stainless steel bowl and an ice pick. In this entry, I am reporting back on my findings.

My first observation the very first time my ice pick ruptured the solid mass of ice was…

“Wow! Crystals!”

You will remember that crystals work by focusing or changing energies at the edges or points. You barely get any edges with ice cubes made from plastic ice cube trays. They’re mostly rounded corners at best.

I found that my drinks tasted better. I used ice in my drinks more often this summer than ever before. Crystalline ice, according to physics alone, would cool a drink faster because it has more surface area than cubed ice. Cubes may last longer, but often get tossed out after the drink is finished.

Using a bowl and pick is actually a much neater and easier process than hoping the right cubes fall out of the tray when you bang on or twist them. There is no spilling when refilling, either! What fools we’ve been! It’s just another conspiracy between the petroleum industry and the appliance manufacturers. Something to advertise and sell.

I do see two problems with making ice the bowl and ice pick way:

  1. Every woman I’ve ever known creates a freezer jammed full of stuff that she has forgotten that she has bought (That fear of famine for the family thing). This hardly leaves room for a circular bowl of ice, as if there is any room for the plastic ice cube trays, either.

  1. Our nanny state shudders at the thought of an ice pick being handy in every kitchen. Surely there would be a couple dozen people dying from falling into their ice pick every year. Would all these deaths be my fault? How many rapists would be warded off? How many domestic disputes would turn violent with an ice pick within easy reach? The name “Ice Pick” is usually reserved for a scary hitman. Let me just say that ice picks don’t kill people.

There are also a couple things you should never do if you use plastic ice cube trays:

  1. Don’t ever imagine multiple freeze thaw cycles fracturing and cracking the interstitial bonds of the plastic polymer, releasing the hormone mimicking molecules of plasticizer known as BPA.

  1. Don’t ever imagine this pseudo hormone pulsating throughout our bodies, deceiving the natural pathways into a self-destructive frenzy that wreaks havoc on our infrastructure.

If you do imagine these things, your only option is to throw out your plastic ice cube trays. Sorry. You know better now.

And then there are the automatic ice cube makers. No crystals here, either. Just weird wedges. Your convenience is only a temporary respite before you struggle with your first ice jam. About five years down the road, the piping eventually calcifies and you’re looking down the ass crack of a plumber who drives a pickup that costs more than your house. In ten years, you will have forgotten the recipe to make ice.

In conclusion, plastic ice cube trays are a complete and total abomination developed to make profits for the petroleum industry. If everyone in the world would toss them out right now, we would improve our trade deficits, reduce our medical expenses, reduce funding for terrorism, lower the

retirement age, reduce crime, improve the gene pool, dis-empower government, and reduce the likelihood of armageddon. Some times the old ways will always be the best way.

Any questions?

I solved all those problems by quitting my yoga class. I do freeze my untested though clear well water in plastic liter (metric plot to take over the world, doncha know?) bottles and reuse them over and over again. Please tell me again how that is going to kill me? I promise to leave the money I save to my daughterinlaw who disapproves of using bad plastic water bottles. She said I would have to use it to pay for cancer treatments. Is she right?

Interesting and funny. I am guilty of the freezer stocking. In my defence: it is easier to buy half a pig (local farmed of course) and have the meat available for when the kids I foster present such behaviour that it is impossible to shop. I also don’t do the convenience food stuff so any pre-cooked stuff in freezer is what I have cooked lovingly with my own fair hands. You are very right about losing skills – there are few who would survive without any mod-cons. I refuse to sucumb to buying a sat-nav because I can use a map and can find my way about. Now this note is becoming about me so I will stop. Enjoyed reading your entry. Best, A

Alternatively, you could buy a stainless steel ice cube tray. Those usually come equipped with a built-in, handy ice remover, which is easy-to-use, and quite convenient. No BPA, either. Although I do suppose cubes aren’t quite as pretty as itty bitty crystals.

I thought the problem with ice picks is that you’ll put your eye out.

When I think of ice pick violence I think of one shoved through an ear into the brain. Am I sick or what? I must have seen it in an old movie or something. My grandmother had some health problem that meant she craved eating ice so she froze metal pans with thin layers of ice to break and eat all day. I’ve done some reading about water and ice crystals and it was amazing really, how water reacts .

Knowing my luck, the ice will freeze too hard and the ice pick will break and fly into my cat’s eye, costing me thousands at the vet’s office and resulting in my having to take care of an old one eyed cat. I’ll stick to my plastic ice trays, since I hardly ever use ice anyway. Thanks for the advice tho. Consider me informed. :))))

I don’t like automatic ice cube makers , there are too many crevices and hose and parts for bacteria to grow in. I like the idea of the bowl, I just recently tried that -freezing it in a bowl and haven’t taken the ice out yet.

RYN people have told methat the chargeable ones are not as powerful as the gas ones, is that true? How did you break so many? I have a small one with rechargeable battery, and I was just tinkeringwith it today and will cut down trees sometime this week…small trees…less than 9 inch trunks one–dead tree with carpenter ants and the other is in the way of where I will install the new pool.
