Gold!!!

No. I haven’t found any gold… yet. I suppose I could preach about how everything can be viewed as gold. Somewhere out there a really rich and greedy man is sitting on a mountain of it, biding his time, enjoyed unbelievable wealth, while holding back from crashing the price of everyone else’s gold.

Not that I wouldn’t mind finding a big chunk for me and my friends.

Another rich and greedy guy somewhere out there is sitting on a mountain of diamonds, too.

Anyway, I’m settling in for my last 20 days in Oz at the sheep station. This morning three of us decided to start climbing the mountains we see from the veranda every day.

It takes about 45 minutes to get to the base, then another 30 minutes to get to the top of the first couple of mounds.

Then we can look back at the ant mount that we’re living in right now.

…and at the taller peaks we’ll be climbing in the next few cool days.

Here’s what I think is a large meteorite.

There are small rocks just like it scattered all over, just like the background in this entry.

If only it was gold, as elusive as the emus that scatter before an oncoming vehicle.

Feeling such hubris at a victory which in reality is as shallow as a pot of gold.

as for diamonds, if you are caught with uncut diamonds in STH Africa it is a worse penalty than murder and rape

I hate to have to tell you now that you’re home but meteorites are worth a fortune now. We have a program here called Meteorite Men who travel all over the world seeking them out and get a lot of money for them. They have conferences or “meets” yearly to sell them to scientists and collectors. You can tell if they are actually real by using magnets. You’ll have to let the sheep guys know .
