Forty-four

Tis the season to be pulling the dead and rotting carcasses of kangaroos out of the dams and tanks (at sheep stations, anyway). It’s so hot and dry that I’m posting ocean waves between each paragraph.

Yes. The outback of South Australia is in another drought, and there is a heat wave currently passing through. How ironic that the weatherman’s hottest place in the world (a few days ago) was here, while the coldest place was Chicago, my other hideout.

44 degrees (110 degrees Fahrenheit) is the new hot (according to me… that global warming thing). Two chooks have died while emus and kangaroos just hang around the water holes before giving up. It’s not a good time for the weak, the young, or the (…gulp…) old. Perhaps I should be breathing with my mouth open like everything else???

I’m doing fine but the internet has collapsed down to one office computer, making noting difficult. How many of our modern electrical conveniences have been tested at 110 degrees? I’ll need to be digging my USB whatchawannacallit out of my suitcase to post this drivel. It’s too hot to care about precision or accuracy.

How quickly and easily it is to imagine this continuing day after day until everything collapses. I’ve grown an appreciation for the man-made well water that runs the AC’s, the lawn sprinklers, the cool showers, and all the water troughs scattered about. Most of the wildlife that exists in this desert wouldn’t be here without them, anyway. How long can the water table hold all this up?

I wish all the energy company CEO’s could spend a day outside in this weather.

Oh, how we merrily await the arrival of Wednesday’s cooler forecast. It’s like we’ve given up on hoping for precipitation. Remember that stuff that falls out of the sky? That stuff called rain? I suppose the station will be struggling with flooding and washed out roads before we know it.

Of course, I’m here and experiencing this for a reason (that Spirit thing). I’ve already endured endless months of below freezing temperatures on my hill. I do believe extreme hot weather is better than extreme cold weather. Both extremes require a small space to be kept at bearable temperatures, but stepping out into the cold is immediately debilitating, while the snow and ice make moving about so dangerous. Give me twenty degrees of freedom from the cold, and I’m still in boots, gloves, cap, and overcoat. Twenty degrees from heat’s peak, and we’re taking walks to a picnic in tank tops, shorts, and thongs.

Woe for the plight of chocolate and ice cream at these high temperatures. It is hard (soft?) on them, but at least I can revel in the glory of an icy cold beer.

I hope the heat wave has passed before I move over there in a couple of weeks. Our place doesn’t have air, or heat for that matter. I might have to go to the mall to keep cool. And, I hate the mall.

Yes, it’s getting warmer. Prices to be paid, I guess. Thanks for the report. Are the ocean pics yours?

Extremes are hard work. Middle ground is comfortable but gets too much of the same after a while. Enjoy the beer. Best wishes, A

ryn: I do not see that as trouble. I see it as keeping myself clean from the residue that will haunt me longer. The trouble that is broiling has always been there. Same thing different people and would still be there whether or not I made a vow. I am going to be the master of my own destiny and if they want to go out and be involved with these people who are not important in my life they can.

Heat wave after heat wave, until all we have is a heat ocean? We get these extremes here too, so it was 43 the other day with hot wind. Very unpleasant. Stay safe.

I came here at random – if there is such a thing – and read most of your front page. God it’s brilliant. I plan to come back and read it again maybe more than once. Only thing I have to add is that you can eat more oatmeal more quickly with a large spoon.

I have to agree with you that extreme heat is preferable to extreme cold for me as well. Enjoy that icy cold beer! I hope you get some rain soon.
