The Guild… prologue, pt. i
The cold wind moved through the castle halls like a silent killer, intent only on it’s destination. Nights in the castle are cold on a normal basis, but tonite, everyone felt an extra bite to the normally chill air. The servants, in their black and gold livery, could be seen walking through the halls, furtive glances betraying their otherwise calm demeanor (?) (appearance). The past 8 days have been lived in a state of fear beforehand unkown to the citizentry of the stronghold. Many of the chambermaids have been known to shriek and faint at any sudden noise; the dark halls ignored for the longer, better lit route. Even the soldiers could be seen, an itch to their hands, their swords hung a little looser in their scabbards.
This is the normal reaction, when that man is known to be in the area. If anyone were to know that he was, at this moment, sitting in the basement storage room, waiting for the next changing of the guard, then the entire castle would be in a total pandemonium. He couldn’t help but take a certain glee in the effect the his presence, rumored or otherwise, had on everyone. The noly thing more satisfying than that fear, was the feeling sliding acroos the neck of the man he was assigned to kill.
It was well past midnight when the time came for this particular job to end. The man got up from the meditative positino he had been sitting in for the past 6 hours. You don’t become the greates assassin in the world by getting nervous or excited. Emotions had no place in his line of work.
He knew he would meet little resistance, if any at all on the way to the kings bedchambers. Even the guards, whose fear-induced adrenaline pumping bodies had them jumping at shadows, would pose little or no threat to the man. And even if any of the guards did see him, which was unlikely, they wouldn’t live long enough to do anyhting about it.
He knew the fastest route form the storage room he was now occupying in the western part of the castle, to the king’s bedchambers in the southern part. He had been studying the layout for the past 8 days. And he had surreptitiously killed the gate guard when he showed up, just to let everyone know that he was there. He couldn’t help but smile when he remembered the look in the guards eyes as his specially made dagger slid into his victims spine, lungs, and throat, almost faster than the eye could see. He does take a cetain pride at being the best of his craft, and his craft was killing people.
