[Deep Secret: a short story]
Disclaimer: I left BUNCHES of details out. I will add them in later. I had to make this quick. …
She smiled as she passed, only looking at me with the corner of her bright blue eyes. Her hair pulled to the back of her head, it swung at her back as she walked. When she turned the corner I looked away.
It was crazy to think about her. She was out of the question. I gave a short sigh as I pushed the elevator button.
Damn it. Think about Tara. Her angry face flashed through my head, bringing me back to reality. The doors opened and I went about the usual business.
Hours later She appeared again. Laughing about something with Tara.
Why is there something always pulling the back of my head? It’s there questioning…. me.
I look down to compose myself quickly before greeting the two.
"Hey there Tara, Lanna. How’s business?"
They both have wide smiles and are trying not to laugh. No doubt Tara has been talking about me.
"What’s up with you two?"
Giving them a sideways glance makes them both crack up. They leave a few short minuets later.
I stand there for a minute. But I have to shrug it off.
It was another hour later and Tara was about to leave. She’d be up here soon, to say good bye. Brace yourself man.
"Gary! I’m going to the store. You need anything?"
I shake my head. I give a kiss and smile. We say our good byes and she leaves as normal. It was strange to see her in such a great mood at the time. The phone rang not that long after. I felt a hug at my heart as I answered the phone.
"Hey! I need two foot longs down here."
I smiled, "Sure I’ll bring them down to ya." I hang up the phone and fire the dogs up. I was down stairs in no time, holding two dogs.
She was waiting in the kitchen for me, smile drawn.
"What took you so long?" She said with her smile never faltering.
I can’t help but smile along with her.
"you gonna take me out for a drink before you do that?"
I ask her as she takes the dogs from me. She laughs and rolls her blue eyes, as she turns to the door. I watch it swing close. I think I might just be thirsty. I walk out there and stand at the edge of the bar. waiting for her to finish the cash out.
"Have a great time, gentlemen!"
She turns to me giving me a fake sneer,
"What could you want? Diet?"
I smile but manage to crack one back,
"Ha, put some Jack in it and we’ll call it even."
I watch her pour the pink lemonade that I always get. When she hands it to me I say,
"I better watch out our you’ll spill it."
Lanna laughs and smiles at me. Suddenly she turns to a customer and gets him a check. I look around and see the place pretty empty. She’s going for a smoke soon. I stand at the corner for a minute before walking to the area. Not long after she’s there too, nearly falling over at the sight of me.
Mostly because she was singing or something as she was walking out here.
"Slacker!"
She had recovered pretty quickly. I just kind of smiled. Not really knowing what exactly to do about anything.
"Gary, you okay? You look dazed… I’m not used to that."
She was standing and stretching in the sun, her cigarette in one out-stretched arm.
"It’s so nice out!"
I could not help myself but I was suddenly standing close to her. It startled her, so she fell into me. Making it all the better.
"Woah, sorry…"
There was a definite blush and down-ward look from her end. I held her, with one arm so she couldn’t move and slowly lifted her head with the other.
I couldn’t do anything but look at her for a moment. I made my move before she could free herself.
Landing a soft kiss on her lips. It felt so soft.
I let her go and she and I both kind of just stood there.
No words were said, and no eye contact was made for the rest of the day.
I had to wonder if was one of those moments in life that you can only get a small taste of.
As I was leaving I felt thirsty, so I took a detour.
When she saw it was me, she turned to the hose and started making me a drink.
Of course she knew why I was here. She was trying hard to act like nothing had happened. She looked at me as she handed me the cup.
I asked for a lid and could not help but get lost in her eyes. when she turned to grab one I was able jump back, feeling guilty the whole time. Heart pumping through my chest.
She smiled at me.
"You know, Gary, you shouldn’t make advancements you can’t keep."
I was stunned by this remark,
"I … don’t know what happened."
She seemed confused by this but said,
"It’s not to say it wasn’t nice. Cos’ it was. It’s just… Tara."
I nodded and really could not think of a word to say. I knew they were friends…. I knew it was wrong.
After that I left, she was still smiling. and I gave her one as well.
