Word of the Day… Christian

just another rant…
me and a friend were commenting the other day on how we use words with no thought as to its true meaning or the impact it has when we use them. so my next couple of entries (hopefully) will be about words we use and how we need to be more careful before we use them.

The First Word will be… Christian (i dunno if you looked at my profile, but there’s a poem on there by Mya Angelou you should read called "Christian")

for those of you who dont kno, i go to a "Christian School" and i’ve heard the topic of who is a christian, what is a christian and so on, many times. recently, i’ve been thinking about this myself. examining my life and the lives of those i love, trust and call "christian" for an answer to these very questions.

a friend of mine on here says on his page that christian is a noun not an adjective. meaning the word doesnt describe who you are, it is who you are.

today the word christian is used to identitfy any person who goes to a church building that speaks from the holy bible. but is that all it takes to be a christian?

i’m sorry for what i’m about to say, but i want to stop being identitfed as a christian (i am a believer) unless you think my life resembles that of a true "christian". now i understand that a lot of "christians" hide their true selves from people, so that they appear to be a "christian". the bible says to try the spirit by the spirit (but you must first have the spirit [of God] in order to try a spirit) and that a true follower of Christ would show and have fruit (spiritual fruit). i also heard a really powerful message on this subject and in that message, he said that we are to examine ourselves against the word of God. this is for churhgoers/"christians" and non-churchgoers.

somewhere in our history we came up with this list/criteria for who is a "christian" and how to be or become "christians" and what "good christians" do and dont do, look like, and a whole bunch of other stuf that is not biblically sound or relevent. its just like anyother stereotype we have in our society today…STUPID!!!

so we have hundreds of thousands of millions of people in curches, schools, and homes judging themseles, examining if they are "good christias" and even if their good people based on these ridiculous stereotypes and criteria (that are all man made). causing them to worry, stress, and doubt themselves and (in some cases) there relationship with God.

and why??? so that the world (other people) can say that you are a good person or a "good christian"? who cares what they think or say. my (your) relationship with God is between he and I (you) alone. thats why he says in his word that he will judge us, that he is the only and perfect judge of us.

one of my life verses says it better David says…  "Against thee (God), thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest."(Ps 51:4 KJV)

i tell people all the time there are only people you have to please with your life as a believer and they are God (first of course) and yourself. people are fickle, people are funny, and most people (even if they dont know it) only look out for number one (themselves). i mean it is in our human nature to survive and if that means hurting others or whatever along the way then so be it.  thats why the greatest two commandents (Matt 22:36 KJV) call for self-sacrifice, because it is so hard to do and completely against our nature.

so lets stop using the word Christian so loosely. lets try to only use it wen it turly applies. also lets take some time to (examine yourself) see if we deserve to be call Christians oursleves.

Hey, great entry. Really! If you ever get a chance, watch Rob Bell’s Nooma video “Rhythm” (it’s only about 10 minutes long) or read his book “Velvet Elvis” (if you haven’t already that is). It’s all about redefining what it means to be a “Christian” and Christianity in general – your thinking seems to be quite similar to his, so you might find it interesting.
