Work Aggravations and Other Stuff
Well it happened again. I went to break and there were two regular register open. I came back from break and they put me on a regular register and sent both of them to do other things. I don’t mind working, but I do mind doing the work of two people by myself. In case you’re wondering if I’m imagining things, ninety minutes later when they sent me to lunch (way too early but I’m tired of arguing) they sent three people out to open registers to replace me.
I don’t know about everyone else, but when I’m on vacation unless I’m doing something “touristy” then I try to blend in with the locals, just as a safety thing. I don’t know what it is about people that come up here to rent cabins but they always stick out like a sore thumb when they come to get their groceries. First of all, they’re almost always the ones that bring their own bags, and they’re usually from chains most of the locals have never heard of, much less been to. Second, when they buy ice they always ask “where are the ice machines?” like they haven’t been sitting next to the doors for the past twenty years. The last time they refinished the floors and had to move them for the night I swear I thought we were gonna find Jimmy Hoffa’s body behind one. And then they have to ask where the nearest liquor store is, and of course it’s directly across the street. Even if you can’t manage to blend in then maybe pay attention to what’s going on around you and learn how to use Google Maps or another equivalent service.
When I went to my oldest nephew’s wedding I went to buy groceries for the hotel room and silently cursed myself for not remembering to bring bags, since his wife’s family lives out in Hippie-ville, USA. But I bought bags that first trip and used them every other time I went. I also used WAZE to find stores and restaurants around the hotel.
I finally got back in touch with my academic advisor and I’m re-registered for classes in my degree program. I’ll only be taking them one at a time now, so I should be able to handle things smoothly. She understood, and said it’s harder than we think sometimes to become a student again as an adult, and we forget that we can’t pour all our energy into school like we did when we were teenagers and things like this happen sometimes.
I really need to get a privacy screen for my laptop. I wonder if anyone make a stick-back one I can install and forget about. I guess it’s time to start checking Amazon reviews and maybe some of the computer specific sites I’m finding out about from classmates in class chats.
