B’day entry
I did say I’d try to get in at some point. I’ve had a madhouse all day. #2 Daughter arrived home last night, and #1 Daughter brought her 2 year old over to stay last night. We finally got him to sleep around 9:30–he’s not a fan of going to bed AT ALL, but we both lay down with him and he settled right down and was asleep in no time, and slept the night through. However, he was into stuff all day long and I have no idea where the remote control is for my TV. I’ve been looking for it all day but I have no idea what he did with it. It could be in a diaper bag, for all I know.
My daughter and I worked on getting the turkey and such together, A brought over more turkey and gravy and plates, because at the last minute, Son called to say that he and his family WOULD be coming for supper, and I needed more plates. Living on my own, I’ve pared things down, so I only have four plates plus my daughter’s divided plates, and three sandwich plates. With 6 adults and three little kids eating (Tifa slept through it all), that wasn’t going to be enough.
In any case, it all went well and I let everyone serve themselves and we scattered around my living room to eat. My little table wasn’t going to be anywhere near enough. A brought gifts for everyone, mostly homemade jams and jellies which he made himself, and he gave me a Discworld companion/compendium book and some candy that I like a lot. We had rum and nog, and wine, and juice for the kids, Pepsi and Dr. Pepper; there was apple pie for dessert, but no one had any room. The 8 year old grandson eventually did have some ice cream, and A had some of my birthday cake from yesterday with ice cream, and Son and I had a bit of cake. I’m full right now, and think I’ll sleep well tonight. Everyone is gone now, including #2 Daughter who is out with friends tonight and will be home tomorrow morning.
Son’s fiancée put away the leftovers, stripped all the meat off the turkey and put the carcase aside so I can make soup, and then did a drainer full of dishes. That was a very nice treat for me. I usually end up stuck with the dishes. Having one’s b’day on Christmas can have its down side, mostly in that some people take it for granted that you’re going to be doing a whole bunch of stuff that they wouldn’t dream of being asked to do on their birthday. But that’s how it goes. I can deal with it or not. One year, though, I’d like to take a Christmas cruise. I think my sister and I should do that together, since her b’day is Christmas Eve.
All in all, it was a pretty good day. I have new books to read, wine to drink, candy to eat, movies to watch. It’s all good.
I hope you’ve all had a wonderful day and that the coming new year brings us all wonderful joys.
Happy birthday and Merry Christmas!
