I got my first tattoo at the age of 20, it was kinda off a spur of the moment idea, not so spur of the moment, like I walked past a tattoo shop and decided to  get one.

More like I thought I might like to get a tattoo, I drew a picture of exactly what I wanted and next time I was in a city ( I was living in Mt Cook), I went in and booked myself an appointment for later that day.

I actually found what I wanted on the wall, it was exactly what I had drawn, and it ended up just being a stencil tattoo.

I got it done on my lower back, (remember this is back in 1995) and I was so uber excited…

Tattoo’s weren’t so mainstream back then, not as much as they are now… just beginning to get popular.

I remember that tattoo for chaptering the stage in my life when I was moving on from everything I knew, out of home, first real job, a live away job, I was into the party scene then, drinking, drugs, just generally having an awesome time.

My next tattoo was just an add on to what I already had.

I met a tattoo artist we got talking, he drew up this design to go on either side of what I had already, and I went back and got it.

I don’t remembering it hurting, I remember watching the guy in front of me getting this massive back piece down, and being uttering enthralled by it.

That marked me moving to Australia, I got it done within a month of arriving here.

In 2007 I got my last tattoo, I actually ended up getting it done on the day that steve and I sent in our divorce papers.

It wasn’t intentional, but very apt.

I read a quote, which I believe is actually the motto of oregan in the states, and it’s a latin verse saying “ alis volat propriss” , or “ she flies by her own wings” I have it between my shoulder blades.

I have seen it a few times now as tattoos, not too often to make me feel any regret, never seen another one in person, just on google searches.

I love tattoo’s.  they are so very personal, and you can’t really say that you don’t like it.  I mean sure I have seen some tattoos that are just shit, and not something that I would ever have etched on my skin, every tattoo means something to the person they are on, I see tattoos as a personal journey.
Walking art.

This has been spurred on by a chat I had with my mum a couple of days ago, as we were swimming laps.

When I first got my original tattoo, and mum first saw it, I could see she was devastated that I had done that, and even now at 35 years old, I was hiding my latin one for the longest time before thinking, wtf? And just letting it go.

Mum mentioned a article in the Aussie woman’s weekly, with these gorgeous photos of woman, but the article was about their tattoos, she eventually asked me what my latin one meant and thus the conversation started.  About how it’s not as stereotypical anymore, how tattoos are way more mainstream.

that tattoo’s haven’t changed who I am as a person…lol

I told her that I was currently researching a couple of ideas, I have new ideas all the time of “next tattoos” but I like to think about them for about 6 months to make sure I still love the design… (thank fuck for that, because I would have a Kanji symbol for “one” and a dandelion by now…)

I love old school tattoos.

I love the rockabilly girl look; I would love to have a sleeve or half sleeve tattoo one day.

I don’t think I have the balls to do that, but in my mind I would love too.

I have always wanted a swallow tattoo… old school, love the meaning and I have this massive thing for birds…

Doona, wall decals, a painting, decals on my scooter, jewellery, I just love birds, so a swallow.

Like this, but without the design inside it.. Just normal shading or coloring.

And I really want a gypsy. I think of myself as one, I have moved so many times lived in 40+ houses, and I just can’t keep still.

I love this design..again… old school.

and I want to get one on my foot…

what do you think of these?

I like the anchor….without the japanese water in the background.

I love the way this rose is done and it symbolises both of my grandparents, they were both massive rose gardeners, they used to have gardens and the house full of them.

Do you have a tattoo story?
