Knut

1) The world’s most famous polar bear risks being evicted from his home at Berlin Zoo because it cannot afford to build the 2.5m tall star a new compound amid the global financial crisis.

2) The once-fluffy white bear who has made the zoo fortunes in revenue is almost ready to mate as he approaches his second birthday.

photobucket
3) He has been overcome by raging hormones and needs a bigger area to romp around.

4) But despite thousands of Knut’s fans signing online petitions for him to stay, the zoo claims it also cannot afford a female friend for Knut.

5) In the last few months, Knut’s life as a celebrity star has spiralled into tragedy. In September Knut’s keeper Thomas Doerflein died of a heart attack. *tear*

6) Doerflein’s sudden death came just months after the zoo cut all contact between Knut and his adored keeper because the once snow white fluffy bear cub had grown too big to play with.

7) There were no signs of any foul play and so far no indications he committed suicide, police said. Some say Doerflein died of a broken heart. *even more tears*

8) Knut the polar bear cub was rejected by his mother, Tosca, shortly after his birth in December, 2006.

9) The zoo’s controversial decision to raise Knut made the cub an instant celebrity. Huge crowds came to see the twice-daily “Knut shows”.

photobucket
10) The decision sparked debates all over the world, with protesters insisting he would have been better off dead than raised by humans.

photobucket
11) After the Berlin Zoo decided to hand-rear Knut, keeper Doerflein became the cub’s surrogate parent.

photobucket
12) Amid all the attention, Doerflein became a reluctant sex icon. He was awarded Berlin’s Medal of Merit in honour of his dedication to Knut. Berlin Zoo was flooded with flowers and tributes after his death.

13) Doerflein kept Knut alive in the beginning, staying with him for 150 days straight. He would sleep on a mattress next to Knut at night and play with him every day.
