I won’t touch on how the PATRIOT Act violates this.
As far as I know, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is illegal in this country. Right? Right. Part of that makes it illegal to remove the female prepuce (clitoral hood). We’ve all heard about that Georgia law that wanted to make female genital piercings illegal, lawmakers construing it as FGM. Of course, they wouldn’t even understand why anybody would want to do such a thing. If it weren’t for the jews, we’d be saying the same thing about circumcision.
Yeah, that’s my point. By law, if female circumcision (excising of the clitoral hood/labia), then male circumcision should be illegal. “…nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws”. I understand “jurisdiction” to mean where the law is applicable. As in, laws in New Jersey don’t apply to people outside of New Jersey. I understand “equal” to mean that, hey, you can’t make exceptions to the law because of race/religion/gender/sexual orientation.
I do not think it’s necessary to outlaw circumcision. All I’ve ever said is that circumcision is a choice, a choice not to be made by parents but by the boy the foreskin belongs to. The same “hygiene” reasons Americans use for circumcision are the same ones used in Africa for FGM. Are we civilized enough to have confidence that we can teach our children to clean themselves?
So-called medical reasons are insufficient. Newsflash: circumcision does not prevent all penile infections. Just ask the parents of those who had their son circumcised. And, what do you know, there’s an infection on the glans anyway. As I’ve said many times, it’s illogical to go Bush Doctrine on “unnecessary” body parts. Tonsils have a purpose (I was told they attract the attention of diseases. Er. I can’t articulate it.), appendices have a purpose (white blood cells, I believe). Among other things, the foreskin acts as a masturbator. Like other mammals, it keeps the moist glans retracted until it becomes aroused.
It’s irrational to chop off body parts before anything is even remotely wrong. Just because you have a risk of breast cancer doesn’t mean you should hack off your breasts. Penile cancer isn’t even that common. If you want to use the Bush Doctrine argument, we should be removing prostates, not foreskins.
Phimosis (inability to retract) is not a valid reason to circumcise, and ESPECIALLY not at a young age. Foreskins become retractable at a variable age. Some pretty young. Others never retract fully, but that doesn’t stop them from enjoying their sexuality.
There’s another concept which I’ve run across recently. When boys are born, penises look pretty much the same. I’m talking size-wise. You can’t predict just how large or small the penis will be. As such, you can’t know how much skin to hack off. Plenty of boys with “successful” circumcisions end up with too tight of skin. If your boyfriend’s scrotum rides up too much when he gets erect, blame it on circumcision.
Now I’m just babbling. My point is that, under law, since female circumcision is illegal, male circumcision should also be illegal. I already qualified that I don’t think this is necessary, and that I just want to see routine infantile circumcision outlawed. If you want to take a knife to your genitals, do it on your own time, just don’t do it to your children.
It makes me wonder why nobody’s bothered trying this in court. Or, maybe somebody has and I don’t know about it. Fact remains, baby girls have special rights over baby boys; that’s sexist and if I understand the fourteenth amendment correctly, unconstitutional. The female prepuce is protected under the law. The male prepuce is not. The male prepuce does not have equal protection under the law.
I’m fascinated by the logic that circumcision helps prevent AIDS. Or rather, that because of this we should hack off foreskins. Denying this “benefit” of circumcision is unnecessary. Circumcision can’t protect people from their own stupidity. It’s not a cure. It just reduces risk. Moreover, most of Europe is intact, and there’s hardly any HIV/AIDS there. Your brain is the best protection you have.
Related to this is the risk of cancer. So the logic there is that we should Bush Doctrine body parts that could become diseased in the future. (And the similar logic that we should hack off all extraenous body parts.) To the first, I ask whether infants with a chance of breast cancer later in life should have masectomies. To the second, should we be hacking off appendices and tonsels at birth?
For the most part, I’m either preaching to a choir, or there’s a lot of people just bobbing their heads. I think it’s been a while since I brought up the topic in my diary. If you agree with me, don’t keep quite, educate others. Even I have to pipe up now and then. If you disagree, educate yourself. And if you’re just bobbing your head, there’s tons of resources out there. Come to terms with it in your own time.

There’s nothing I can say I haven’t said or thought before.
I agree that male circumcision should be left up to the male. I don’t think that laws prohibiting female circumcision, which is usually done with no anesthesia, which is usually done when females are adults, ritualistically, and which removes the clitoris-the only human organ designed for sexual pleasure-equals more rights for female babies than male babies.

But you’re right that no one should touch anyone else’s genetalia without their consent. Female circumcision is mostly a third world thing. Hopefully one day foreskin circumcision will be a third world thing.

Ahh, Timmy, I really thought about this, and you’re right. DAMN YOU.
Warning Comment
Ooh, did I prompt a Timmy entry? That’s gotta be some sort of accomplishment. I’m totally with you. Also, I was told that if you don’t have tonsils, you get strep throat more — same virus, or something.

And the reason why I didn’t really have much of a view before is that (believe it or not) I’d never actually seen a penis before. I mean, I had an idea of what they looked like, but I’d just avoided ever actually seeing one. And well, now I’ve seen one, up close. My boyfriend actually showed me how they do circumcisions, and I cringed. Holy shit, man. That’s just awful.

I never gave any of this a thoguht before, but constitutionally, you’re sbsolutely correct. I’m circumsized, and I can’t attest to any efficacy, since by nature I like to be clean..everywhere.But I’m goddamned if at 20 I’d say “My parents gave me a choice, so hack away at that foreskin, Doc!” That’s why they do it at infancy- so yo can’t be horrified at the mere thought of someone coming at that
Warning Comment
part of you with a knife. Anyone tried that now on me, I’d surely be fighting for something far more imortant to me than God and country.
Warning Comment
This isn’t an idea that comes naturally to me, but I agree with your point, and would add that for all we talk about not bowing to cultural relativism when we condemn FGM, it’s a hefty dose of our own culture that sees circumcision as perfectly normal. I didn’t think about it much before you started writing about it, and now I’m glad that you did, because it’s changed the way I looked at it.
Warning Comment
I’m no pre-law kid, but this makes a lot of damn sense. Someone SHOULD try it in court. But I think most parents here wanna hack of their kids’ foreskins so the courts don’t wanna make it illegal. I dunno.

RYNS: Thanks so much for trying to help! When I got home, I found the Windows disk, and nothing worked. It started to, and then pretty much stopped and restarted. So… I was forced to call Dell, which actually ended up being a good thing. Something did go bad, don’t know exactly what. However, I apparently purchased an extended warranty so all will be well. I probably will lose…

a bunch of stuff. Which really fucking sucks. My music files and pictures are especially dear to me. My music files were really starting to look promising. Damn it all to hell. And let’s not forget, I do have a Timmy… Brad. 🙂 I always provide him with boobies, as far as donuts I guess I’ll have to go out and get some. Thanks again… I appreciate it.

this has nothing to do with what you posted, but today in my history of maths class, the professor was talking about how he’s writing this book with a friend about how viagra has killed probably 40000 people (both men and women) because of the effects it has on the heart. (people end up dying of heart attacks or some such thing). anyway so instead of talking about the history of maths today…

we spent the entire class talking about viagra. it was actually quite fun. hahaha. anyway the professor rocks and i know this has nothing whatsoever to do with whaty ou posted but… i thought you’d be interested for some reason. haha.

110% agree. I won’t bore you with a rant that will be exactly the same as your entry… but yes, I’m all for choice and equality and all that good sh*t.

Heh, removing prostates would be worse, that’s like the male G-spot… though many are too homophobic to even let a girl stimulate it. I know a girl who got her clit hood pierced twice in a cross, but I can’t imagine piercing the actual clit itself. I have also heard actual clit piercings can make you lose feeling there after about a year. Do you know if that’s fact-based?
Warning Comment
Thanks for your note. I intend to have more nights like that one, if it kills me. 😉

I like to tell people what I think about circumcision. They’re all like “You’re a girl, why does it matter?”People are so dumb.Samie’s
Warning Comment
*shrug* I heard complete loss of sensitivity. Regardless, clit or hood, the idea makes me shudder.
