On My Left Foot.
To reiterate, I woke up this morning and couldn’t put weight on my left foot without discomfort.
I’ve had some time to reflect upon this and ponder how the hell this happened. I’m convinced it wasn’t lifting. After deadlifts, I felt fine. Hours later, I was out and about with my dad. I only noticed something odd towards the evening. It’s a sensation that visits now and then, so I usually just shake it off.
There’s only one thing that pops out in my mind. I randomly did some PNF stretches for my calves. Maybe fifteen seconds, each leg. Didn’t feel anything odd in my foot while doing it. (Sure felt it in my calves, though!) I was doing them because I’m getting closer to being able to have my feet flat on the ground while doing Downward Dog.
Yet, I was walking just fine after that. So, since there was no specific traumatic event, I can only assume whatever happened isn’t permanent. It struck randomly, and will leave randomly. Or, well, isn’t terribly serious. If it was a tendon pull or strain or some cartilage rubbed away, I would have noticed pretty goddamn fast last night.
I went looking through my A&P stuff to pinpoint the location of the pain. I think it’s my navicular bone, around there. Forward of the heel, but behind the arch slightly, in the inside. I tested what causes discomfort. I can rotate inside with minimal discomfort. If I rotate outside, I feel pain in that area. Pressing down in the air doesn’t really hurt, and neither does raising the foot up.
When I got up this morning and tried to walk, my instinct was to roll my foot and walk like that. However, I know that’s one of the worst things you can do to yourself, so I’ve resigned myself to hobbling on my heel. I know, walking your heel isn’t all that great, either, but I’m just trying to minimalize the discomfort.
I hope this doesn’t last long. I got shit to do. And more importantly, I can’t do any legwork with a bum ankle! Bah. Damn you, Phase III!
This has gotten me thinking about all that Magificient Mobility shit. I can say from doing Yoga that my ankles definitely need more stability. I have no balance! Those muscles down there don’t need to be stretched so much as they need to be conditioned, to be honed.
If this lasts longer than a week, which will annoy the shit out of me, I’ll take two weeks to do some unlateral work to bring my left leg back up. I’ve broken a leg before, and I know how much the dominant leg will compensate. I’ve lost count of how many King Deadlifts I’ve inadvertantly done today.
Anyway, that’s the status of My Left Foot.
i once had something similar happen to me when I was working out regularly. They said it could have been a stress fracture (they don’t hurt when you GET them apparently, they hurt later on and don’t show very well on xrays) or it could have been a ligament sprain. Either way, they basically just told me to leave it alone, it’ll get better. I know how much it sucks though. Be careful walking! I fell and slammed my head against the pavement and got a concussion when I had that.

Yikes! Sounds painful and pain is never fun-no matter was the S&M folk say…. I did laugh at downward dog though. Just because I’m like that.

I had problems with stability in my ankle brought on by too much yoga. I had to change my practice a bit, but I still practice (I have to, I teach yoga for a living).
