Natural Selection of Religion.
I’m surprised I haven’t written on this. I bet Cliff’s the one that pointed it out to me. He does that to me a lot.
Why do religions survive? It has nothing to do with whether they are right or wrong, good or bad. Having some base in reality is only mildly correlative to religious success. After all, most religious myths are completely out of this world.
In short, the religion that creates more of its followers than another religion will survive. How many religions state that you HAVE to follow that religion, or must indoctrinate your children, or indoctrinate your enemies? Enough of the major religions of the world that cause so much drama. Go figure.
Imagine a religion that just said, “Hey, let’s get along, and if you want to believe other stuff, that’s cool, and you don’t even need to brainwash your kids!” Given the way everything’s been done before, I’m willing to bet someone started a Let’s Just Be Cool religion. That didn’t last long, now did it? No, a good religion has lots of DRAMA and … CIRCUMCISION! Oh yes, can’t be a good religion without hacking off some flesh for no reason. Just look at the native americans. Just look at Africa. Mutilate your child and she will be accepted into the community!
Nah, now I’m just shooting my mouth off. It’s a fascinating thing that people can believe things that are false. That’s the very nature of Santa Clause, after all. Convince your followers of some delusion, and have them outreproduce other religions. The religions that say we shouldn’t have sex don’t last long. But surround sex with shame so that we only fuck with others of our religion? That’s a winner. Wouldn’t want to create some bastard child of a different religion!
I used to write such long pieces of crap. It’s quite a simple concept. I’ll stop here. After all, I suspect someone will throw a counterargument, pointing out a religion that isn’t completely full of shit. Even so, to survive, there had to be something about it that caused followers to reproduce, or people to take it up. As I said, Natural Selection of Religion. The ones that survive are the ones that survive.
I hope my lack of religion survives.

I’m all for the church of Let’s Be Cool – I survived 12 years of Parochial School hell at the hands of some mightly vicious priests and evil penguins. the upside is that I was completely and totally smokin hot in that short plaid pleated skirt.

You know, I don’t have a problem with people finding peace in their own religions… just don’t force it on everyone else. Ugh. Cuz not everyone buys into it… *shrugs*

There’s good and bad in any religion, just like with pretty much everything out there. No argument that pure acceptance without questioning is ignorance. But, so is complete generalization. Now I’m shooting my mouth off. 🙂

mm, good ol’ flesh-hacking
Warning Comment
as for the hacking of flesh. think of it this way, the only thing in this world that really belongs to you is your body. when some religions do a flesh offering it’s because it’s all they can offer that is truly of themselves. now, the penis skin just gets thrown away. i would understand circumcision if it was done to adults and MEANT something. i’m all into your “be cool” religion. i’vebeen a Be-Coolite for as long as i can remember. but i’m still seriously considering starting the Exitists, a religion of people who are in the process of leaving their childhood religion. it’s not a bad idea. a religious childhood is the definition of brainwashing.

Oddly enough, the Bible actually frowns on circumcision. I ought to go look up those verses that say it’s vile and sinful and God will bitchslap you if you do it to your kids. Now THAT’S something that most people don’t know.

Interesting, the above noter’s comments… – all MY Bible says about circumcision is… Nevermind. No sense in wars starting – there’s enough of that going on without my help. Anyway: People that get so angry about religion always amaze me. Why do you care what other people choose to believe? And if your thoughts are correct – why do so many itty bitty religions still survive?
Warning Comment
Well, the part of the bible that talks about circumcision also recommends using only the best of your sheep for the blood sacrifice to God.
Warning Comment
actually, the bible DOES promote circumcision. it’s an “everlasting covenant” in genesis. just wanted to clear that up.
