NaNoWriMo10 Writing Soundtrack TO VICTORY.

As I did, well, four years ago, here’s a rough collection of mix that I listened to during the making of this year’s rather successful NaNoWriMo effort. While in years past I relied heavily on Smashing Pumpkin’s “Adore” and “Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness”, this year I pretty much amused the Amelié soundtrack.

Despite having several days where I didn’t write anything, I’m currently sitting at around 76K words. In fact, by my count, I had FIVE days where I wrote nothing. And several others where I only wrote a couple hundred words. This, of course, is counted by several days (like today) where I cranked out over 5K words. My best effort was the 6th, where I cranked out 8K words. By my count, I had seven days where I cranked out over 5K words.

For those that care, my current words per day today is sitting at 2720 words. Early in the month, I was able to hold over 3K a day, but when I missed writing a couple days, it was impossible to keep my average over 3K a day.

As for my novel itself… I’m immensely satisfied. I’m great at beginning and middle of the novel. But transitioning to the end is extremely difficult. My first novel, I spent so much time near the beginning of the novel that I had to cut it short due to lack of time. My second novel, I still felt pressed for time in terms of “wrapping it up”. My fourth novel, I knew the ending, but literally didn’t know what to do with my characters while they were trying to get to the end.

This novel, I regularly wrote future scenes in advance when I felt inspired. This gave me a huge sense of direction, knowing where my characters NEEDED to go. There were one or two times where I had to edit scenes later based on things I ended up writing later, but it was never a serious problem.

For those that haven’t been reading it, my story is ultimately a love story. It’s really a cliché concept of two people always knowing each other, holding each other at a distance, but ultimately realizing that they should be together no matter what. Campy at times, but I was really able to drag out the emotional tension for a long time. In doing so, I really hope it was emotionally poignant when that tension is relieved. If my first two novels were about the little sister I never had, this novel is about the best friend/girlfriend I never had.

I’ll edit at some point over the next two days, but I don’t expect anything other than spelling, phrasing, and maybe an addition of a few lines. No more than 2000 words extra, probably. If 200, heh. When it’s finish-finished, I’ll be more than happy to give out a copy to anybody that ones one.

I genuinely doubt anybody will want it. I mean, shit. 76K is a LOT of words to read on a screen! That’s why it’s better to read it while it’s written. Far less intimidating.
