RENOVATIONS

A few months ago a long established local restaurant changed owners. In a possible gesture to the local patrons minimal alterations were made to the exterior of the place. Inside the work was mostly devoted to cleaning the old worn furnishing. One thing that had been there for years was a series of bookshelves holding even older books the allowed customers to read or even take one home to finish. The real schtict was that a customer went to a window, chose his cut of meat and how heavy he wants and how it should be grilled. Now one orders from the menu and the mastic is gone. Not all progress is progress. At least they retained the ramkins of Pub Cheese accompanied by Ritz crackers on the bar.

When the facade was exposed during the work a name was exposed. NOLAN. Research into the history of the place determined the original place had been called Jack Nolan’s Gay Nightclub. Since the place existed since the turn of the century the vernacular had added new meanings to words.

My Father-in-Law was named Jack Nolan. His children are , Barbara, my deceased wife, Barry and Bernice. He had a thing for B names. They all worshiped the ground his feet never trod on. Collectively there was never a sense of humor associated with them in regard to their Father. I presented all of them with a laminated copy of the newspaper article and a framed 4 X 6′ print of the above photo.Naturally there was no connection between the two Jack Nolan men.

Character assignation of the most satisfying nature !!!! As Jackie Gleason would proclaim ” HOW SWEET IT IS “

I’m hoping the bookshelves are still there. That sounds wonderful. Hard to see changes, but hopefully they’ll keep the food the same, and the ambiance similar. Odd coincidence about the names!
