DRINKING DAY’S DRIVING LESSONS

Six years ago on a hot September Sunday I left Mass with my wife and my mother-in-law. A young woman stopped me outside of Church and introduced herself as a Doctor new to the area. She told me that while sitting behind me at Mass she had noticed a mole on my neck in the hair line that looked suspicious I thanked her and told her I would have it checked out. Monday I called and made an appointment with a Dermatologist but I had a six week wait to be seen. .A periodical physical appointment brought me to my regular Doctor in four weeks. I asked his opinion about the mole and was told to see the Dermatologist with out fail.

I was apprehensive in the examination room. When the Doctor came in he immediately told me that the mole should be removed and proceeded to cut if out. His opinion was that it was a Melanoma and that he had removed it all. Biopsy confirmed that it was a Melanoma and I was sent to a Surgeon to have additional surrounding tissue removed as a precaution . The operation was outpatient and I went home the same day. To date there has been no reoccurrence of the Melanoma and I go for regular checkups.

The are several sub stories about this incident in my life and I will deal with some at a later date. This whole event was brought back to mind by something in another person’s diary; Katherine. She talks about an incident when she was driving after excessive green beers. I literally shudder when I remember how I drove and what condition I was in while behind the wheel. That I never killed anyone was a miracle. The point being that while my wife was driving me home from the Hospital she had a migraine headache with the attendant flashing lights and double vision. Because of the drugs I could not take the wheel and it looked this was to become a royal pain. Then I suggested that she place a hand over one eye and drive home that way. It amazed her that now she did not see double anymore and we proceeded home safely. She later asked me how I knew that that would relieve the double vision of a migraine and I admitted that this was a lesson from drinking and driving.

Today was a great day with bright sun and warm temperatures marred only by gale force winds. I hope that the weather is going to give us a break for the weekend.
