My in-town friend C called tonight to inquire about my other in-town friend N. They have met at my house and at beach weekend. C was concerned about N’s college girl in New Orleans at Tulane. I called and talked to N, and then sent the following update to C:

I called N tonight. They only have daughter K and one friend as refugees. Many students headed to Baton Rouge (not exactly out of the way). Tulane has told everyone “don’t come back until we tell you to”. K just moved from her 4th floor dorm to a 3-foot-off-the-street row house with a roommate from Clear Lake (here in the Houston area). After arguing with parents as to whether she actually needed to come home (parents are SUCH over-worriers), she did finally come home, crawling on I-10 and complaining of the 100+ heat as Dad told her to keep her a/c off unless actually moving. After arriving home and looking at the tv weather, it has occurred to K that she might lose everything! Her previous hurricane escape was so fun, it apparently never occurred to her to get the “important” stuff like the electronic copies of her thesis with which she had hoped to get into grad school…
