The Researchers

I’m having OD issues at the moment. I wrote an intro to this entry, which has disappeared, and I’m getting an error message when I try to save. 🙁 Let me try again.

“How’d it go?” Eva asked Liam when he came into their shared office.

Liam shook his head. “I don’t think they believe we’re onto anything important. They’re convinced that the cases aren’t related in any way and that the similarities we pointed out are only coincidental. ‘There’s no way a boy in Nova Scotia is relevant to cows in the Australian outback,’ is what they said. Silly bastards.”

So, do we stop?” Eva preferred to keep digging. She felt certain they were on the trail of something huge, something new and potentially terrifying.“

No, we don’t,” he said. “I’m not giving this up in favour of chasing after Sasquatch or something.” He threw the file folder down on the desk. Eva’s fingers moved over her keyboard. I might have something to boost your mood,” she told Liam. “I got an answer from Muddy Wolfe.”

Liam gave her a blank look. “The Australian rancher,” she added for clarity. “You know, the one whose cows you were just mentioning. He answered all our questions. You might find his answer to number four interesting.” She turned the monitor toward Liam.

He came across the room.He read the fourth question and the answer. “In the day?” He looked at Eva.

“Weird, isn’t it? Tasmanian devils are nocturnal, but his reasoning seems sound.” Eva leaned back in her chair. “And I have some other news for you. That boy from Nova Scotia, he’s at Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto. Did you know there’s a psych ward there? Who knew? Anyway, he’s started speaking again and says he saw some of the creatures down on the street, in the grassy median chasing a bag lady.”

"Toronto? What’s he doing in Toronto?” Liam asked.

“His parents insisted. They didn’t think he was getting adequate care in Halifax, so they moved him to Toronto after a week of no response. It seems to have worked out. Anyway, he’s talking. We can’t afford to go to Austrlia, but one of us could go to Toronto.”

Liam gazed at Eva and nodded slowly. “Yes. Yes indeed.”
