Time travel, and the like
Farbeit for me to have the thought of time travel in the brain,
But I can’t help but wonder.
Time travel, past or future. Several theories exist, shall I say, have existed for hundreds of years.
From wormholes, to the Einstein-Rosen bridges (which in itself is a mass of reading), ectoplasm and even mental mind time travel (in which one would travel through time internally, through a coma-device or other such mental corruption)
Do I believe time travel is possible? Indeed I do. And why not? Time is merely broken down in chronological events, happening one by one in order, OR time as known and invented by man, to track and keep. The essence of time, children, is in our own minds. We’ve certainly not had any problems making what’s in our minds a reality….Allow the apple ipod, the internet, the very computer you are reading this from was once just an idea, a mere thought that was put to paper and eventually, gradually, made better.
Sometimes I wonder what a time machine would consist of, Be it man made or natural, or space age or nuclear. But to understand the time travelling device, One must understand time travel as a whole, or at least have an idea of what is involved. I won’t bother with the Einstein-Rosen bridges, as these are a mass of understandings and theories that would take up the entirety of my and your time.
quoteth wikipedia on the matter of travel through a wormhole, or faster than light travel, which i the basis of time travel in itself:
A wormhole could allow time travel. This could be accomplished by accelerating one end of the wormhole to a high velocity relative to the other, and then sometime later bringing it back; relativistictime dilation would result in the accelerated wormhole mouth aging less than the stationary one as seen by an external observer, similar to what is seen in the twin paradox. However, time connects differently through the wormhole than outside it, so that synchronized clocks at each mouth will remain synchronized to someone traveling through the wormhole itself, no matter how the mouths move around. This means that anything which entered the accelerated wormhole mouth would exit the stationary one at a point in time prior to its entry.
For example, consider two clocks at both mouths both showing the date as 2000. After being taken on a trip at relativistic velocities, the accelerated mouth is brought back to the same region as the stationary mouth with the accelerated mouth’s clock reading 2005 while the stationary mouth’s clock read 2010. A traveller who entered the accelerated mouth at this moment would exit the stationary mouth when its clock also read 2005, in the same region but now five years in the past. Such a configuration of wormholes would allow for a particle’s world line to form a closed loop in spacetime, known as a closed timelike curve.
It is thought that it may not be possible to convert a wormhole into a time machine in this manner: some analyses using the semiclassical approach to incorporating quantum effects into general relativity indicate that a feedback loop of virtual particles would circulate through the wormhole with ever-increasing intensity, destroying it before any information could be passed through it, in keeping with the chronology protection conjecture. This has been called into question by the suggestion that radiation would disperse after traveling through the wormhole, therefore preventing infinite accumulation. The debate on this matter is described by Kip S. Thorne in the book Black Holes and Time Warps. There is also the Roman ring, which is a configuration of more than one wormhole. This ring seems to allow a closed time loop with stable wormholes when analyzed using semiclassical gravity, although without a full theory of quantum gravity it is uncertain whether the semiclassical approach is reliable in this case.
So there you have it. In plain english. A topic that interests me to the melting point, but unfortunately it is late and I must be getting to bed. Any thoughts?
Two things. First, it says right there at the end that this method essentially wouldn’t work. Second, wormhole is shorthand for Einstein-Rosen bridge; they’re the same thing, the same way that pop and soda are the same thing. If you are interested in time travel, though, I’d recommend the book that Wikipedia referenced. I read it maybe ten years back, so I don’t remember it well, but I know it

interested me greatly at the time. If I recall, it was one of the first science books for lay-people discussing the possibility of time travel within the framework of a modern (modern being 1994) understanding of the physical laws of the universe. It’s 500 pages long, so if you don’t have the time, then don’t bother. Peace.

Hi hun! Just stopping by to say Hi and that I love you! I think you already know what I would say on this entry… Let me hear from you soon hun~ Susan

Forgive my tired secondhand. I meant not to explain the entire ordeal of the einstein-rosen bridges, not that they and wormholes were two different things. Latsly, this method is highly unorthodox and generally seen a not worthy, but then, most theories of time travel are. One must approach said theories with an open mind.

Ryn: You could maybe construct a time machine based on that book, but you’d need a non-rotating black hole, a very maneuverable spacecraft, and a shitload of luck, and likely as not, you wouldn’t know where exactly it is you were going. I don’t think there are any black holes close enough to reach within your lifetime, and in the real world, there probably aren’t non-rotating black holes, so you

may be SOL on that category. The good news is, if they invent life-extending treatments within your lifetime, and you live long enough to see time travel implemented, maybe you’ll be able to go back in time and give yourself access. Maybe that would have already happened, though.
