El Patio
THE PATIO (1938)
Evaristo Ribera Chevremont
The patio, in its trench of wires and cords,
enjoys both, moderate sun, of the midday.
I take notice of the crumpled paper in your corners,
lots of bottles, discarded rags.
Sunny, serene, ripened, vast,
the tomatoes burst, the peppers burst.
Amongst the accented green, the incarnate
reveals, with great vigor, their courage.
The air is saturated with the smell of the tubs;
and, perfected simplicity, domestic enclosure,
their coupling made the cock and the hens
in the virile inundations of instinct.
In details indicating simplicity, the patio
abounds. So joyful with its easy life,
of a life that is blazing and fruitful,
discover there the colossal fruits of the higüera.
