Humanity? Compassion? Just Pretty Words?

What kind of humanity are we
If the only man willing to help
Is left to die in your place?

Where are these pretty words
When someone needs to hear them?

I am sick at this sight
As any man with a soul should be
There is nothing that could be more important
And yet, if it isn’t your problem
Why should you care?

Sometimes someone else isn’t going to take care of it
Sometimes it’s up to you to step up
And prove your humanity
Even if it means no one will step up for you…

I think it takes tragedies such as this
For humanity to realize how compassionate
We are not, how we fall short of our calling
To be the hand that reaches out to catch an unknown neighbor
For no reason at all, and no reward

Other than to know
That for one day at least
We have lived up to a reputation worth keeping

Makes me sick to my stomach. Bystander effect or not… There should have been at least one person among those 25 that should have attempted to help. It’s like calling fire instead of help because more people will respond to fire(out of fear for their own lives I think) than someone screaming for help.

I think that your words here describe the discrepancy between where we as a society think we are, and where we actually are as a society. There is still plenty of work to be done and lessons learned.
