Ornithological Thank You!!

giveaway of the day

***Thank you very much, everyone – I think it’s a House Wren – and I KNEW you all would come up with lots of ideas! Especially Ameile’s Twin and Mote – I really appreciate it, thank you very much!***

Okay, my Experts – what kind of bird is this? It’s TINY…not even as long as my hand. It is nesting in a Gourd birdhouse hanging in a flowering crab tree in my Mom’s yard, and it has a beautiful trilling call.

Oh, and I promise – the recipe for the biscuits will follow tomorrow!

I can tell by the wing bars that it’s a wren of some sort! I see one once in awhile in my parents’ yard too. 🙂

Yes, my guess is a House Wren. Could also be a Winter Wren, according to my bird book hehe.

Yeah, I would guess house wren, too. Or do you get Carolina Wrens up that far? I dunno. My east coast bird smarts aren’t that current. 🙂

Yep, looks like a house wren…these birds are actually bad news for other songbirds, as they will take over a nest, puncture the eggs and kill the young. Our nature center teacher said we should remove any of their nesting materials you might find in man made nest boxes — they have very messy nests, filled to nearly the top with all sorts of junk. I don’t have the heart to do it though…

That is a definitely a BEAUTIFUL BIRD!!!

I agree — looks like a wren, but I don’t know which type. To respond to Kemma’s note, according to my Peterson’s guide, the Carolina Wren is resident year-round that far north, though at the time of publication that was fluctuating due to what had been harsh winters back then. The Sedge Wren is sporadic. Only the Bewick Wren is generally not in your area, making only a casual appearance.
