TeenOpenDiary Viewer and Import

Years back, I also ran (in addition to OD) a sister site  named TeenOpenDiary, or TOD.  Many of our users that are on OD today got their start on TOD, back in the day – it was a pretty large community, and thrived (pretty much on it’s own, because I was totally wrapped up in OD) for several years before I was forced to shut it down due to not having enough time or resources to maintain it.

Back then, I offered TOD users the opportunity to import their diaries into OD, so they could continue here.  Many, many TOD users did just that – but there were many others who didn’t.  Because of that, we have had many requests here at OD to bring the TOD import back to life.

It was a little complicated to do so, because the TOD data files were taken off our servers three years ago to make space and archived.  As of today, I’ve brought them back from the archive and put them back into production so they are available for importing into OD once again.  If you are an ex-TOD user and you are interested in seeing your old TOD, or importing into your current (or a new) OD, you can now do so.

There are two new links on the OD front page, way down at the bottom left.  The first is the "TOD Diary Viewer" – this is a stripped-down version of the old TOD software, which allows you to view diaries and log into them (if you know the name and password), but doesn’t allow any editing or changes.  So, you can look at your diary (and the public bits of other people’s), but you can’t add entries, leave notes, change settings, or anything like that.

Which brings us to the second link, the "TOD Diary Import".  If you have a TOD, and you want to bring the entries (and notes, if you want) into your current diary, you can do so if you know the password to the TOD.  If you click the import link, you will first be asked to provide the name and password of the TOD – please note that you must first be logged into the diary on OD that you want to import the TOD into.  If you are logged into an OD, and you provide a valid TOD name and password, then the import facility will walk you through the steps to import your TOD entries and then your TOD notes (optional) into your OD.

If you do import your TOD into your OD, the entries will appear in your diary in date order with the other entries you already have (due to the change made last week, described in my previous entry).  So, if your TOD entries are older than your current diary, they will appear at the beginning of the current diary.

Anyway, that’s probably too much description – it’s a pretty simple process, and I hope some of you will be able to use it to reunite your old TOD entries with what you have now.

Oh, and good news is – now that I have this importing thing worked out, I will be bringing other import facilities online very soon.  The first will be the ability to bring other ODs into your current OD – so you will be able to merge diaries if you have more than one here.  That will arrive in the very near future.

That’s great 🙂 I never had one there, but have one old OD that I would like to transfer to this one… is that going to be an option anytime? I could spend the time and do each one, but that’s over 1,000 entries…

RYN: Thanks for letting me know 🙂

Would the future import, possibly work to bring back entries from other diary sites as well? I came over from Journal Community and I would love to be able to use the diary files that they allowed us to download before they shut down to save at this site. Thanks for all you do!

How well I remember my Teen Open Diary! Okay, NOT! When I was a teen, you, Diarymaster, were not yet a twinkle in your parents’ eyes. Possibly, one or both of your parents hadn’t even been born! In my youth, a Teen Open Diary was an actual book that a girl wrote in (with PEN) and then locked (with an actual LOCK).

Any chance to do that with QSD?

I’m excited for the diary merging feature! =] Thank you for taking the time to work on it.

Awesome, just viewed my TOD. How cringeful. I can’t import it though because I can’t remember the password and the email address that I used with it is gone now. =( xx

Yay! Thank you!

September 16, 2009

Great job.

Nifty.

Holy crap, DM! This place is getting more and more snazzy all the time! Thanks!

September 16, 2009

I was so excited about this at first, but I couldn’t find my diary on search, and I can’t log in ‘cuz I can’t remember my password, or the e-mail address I used. 🙁 Oh well. I’ll keep trying, I suppose.

September 16, 2009

Finally figured it out. 🙂 Thanks for doing this.

September 16, 2009

Awesome – my husband started out on TOD 🙂

September 16, 2009

Thanks for doing this again…I actually tried importing mine years ago, but it didn’t work (I think because of the backdating thing, and I had overlapping dates) so I had to start a blank diary with a different name and import it there. But it worked just fine this time!

Thank you so much! I really appreciate it! though I am wondering now if i could get in touch with diarists from so many years ago…

Mr DM, i cannot access my TOD. I dont think I ever deleted it, but i last updated it in Novemeber 2002. Could it have been permanently deleted? authorname was Marya M.

Makes me also wonder whatever happens to them stop-smoking diaries.

September 16, 2009

Oh! I will check on this site. Good for my teenage daughter! 🙂

I like the merge idea A LOT.

Wow, it never ceases to amaze ((techno/impaired me) me, how many things you can do, etc. Thank you BighUgz.

i wish i knew what my old email address was lol.

🙂

September 18, 2009

Ahh, I’ve tried to import my old diaries but it tells me that: Import files are limited in size to 1 megabyte or less. Please select a smaller file. I’m not hellbent on importing them, but it would be nice if there’s something I can do to fix it. A belated Happy Birthday as well!

September 20, 2009

omg that is amazing because i used my tod to keep track of my daughters pregnancy

September 20, 2009

what do you do if you cant remember the email or the name lol apparently i changed the name of my diary before it got shut down. it used to be lilpunkrawker or something along that line 🙁

September 21, 2009

Thank you soooo much, I’ve always wanted to import it but it never worked before… Now I’ve got my entries recovered from 2002..although now I’m not so sure that’s a good thing because I see what a complete blithering idiot I was 🙂 Anyways, thanks so much!

September 21, 2009

What about QuitSmokingDiaries…any chance that can can be viewed, if not imported.

September 25, 2009

I found my old diary, but I can’t remember the password and the e-mail I used back then is no longer in use. Is there any way to get into it since I know the diary name and know what e-mail I had listed? Any help would be greatly appreciated! That diary covers 5 of my teenage years… it’d be a shame to lose all of that!

October 9, 2009

what about importing the QSD diaries? Some of us TODers had to use it for a time as a substitute for when TOD was down.
