Speeding up
Hello to all our new members who have joined today! I must say, the response was a good bit higher than we expected (which is wonderful) and I’m sure many of you saw that there was a lot of slowness in the site this afternoon and evening.
This was all related to a higher than expected number of members reclaiming and importing their diaries – if you’re here, you’ve seen that there is a process to this that involves us moving your diary entries and notes into our new databases.
The good news is that Engineering has been working all day and will continue to work tonight on tweaking the site performance, and we should be in much better shape by tomorrow. One solution that we are working on is to queue up the incoming members’ diary imports so they are only performed overnight, in late hours when the site is quieter. Right now, they are being imported in real-time when the member requests it, which can take several minutes but also clogs up the site.
Queuing the imports in this way will make the performance of the site much better during the busy times of day – but means new members will have to wait a bit longer (maybe up to 24 hours) for their new entries to import. Please be aware that if you are waiting for your diary to import, you can still post entries, write notes, and do anything else you can do with your diary while that is happening.
I’m so glad and the team is so excited that we have had so many people come back today – welcome home!
This is all totally awesome. I feel like a Mama Hen watching all her chicks come home, LOL> 😉
@butterfly4him that’s so cute!
@thediarymaster : Aw, thank you!! 🙂

I’m so happy it’s back. It feels like home! This place was always the best and even if I am starting anew it feels like I’ve never left.
@uncertaintragedy I’m glad you’re back too!

Thanks for the update! And thanks for just bringing it back. I’ve missed it so much!
@carolinabound you’re welcome! We missed it too!

ah .. so uk readers are currently seeing it very very slow because of your “overnight” (not for us!!) uploading of diaries. ????
@thegenie sorry about that, but it’s just a matter of picking a time when there are the least number of users on the site (which traffic at those times is about 20% of other times). We love our members in the UK, and this should only be for a few days until we get back to normal – thanks for your patience!

18 hours and counting….interesting queue system you got set up there 🙂
@roowoo if you’re diary’s not done yet, it should be soon!

Open Diary’s Engineering Team is #1!
@wildrose_2 thanks, we think so too!

I’m still getting some slowness this AM, but I’m not holding it against you. Yet. Maybe I’ll start sticking pins in the voodoo doll next week …
@kingofi thank you, point taken (ha) and should continue to get better through the day.

Really happy to be here! Thanks!
@onlysujema thank you!

Great idea on the overnight importing. Just popping in to say I’m still experiencing some delay in navigating the site. Not complaining, just giving feedback, as I know there are tweaks being made with the public grand opening. 🙂

This just makes me happy! Thank you!

Queue a bunch of people telling you what you should have expected, should have done or where you should have put OD instead of WordPress.
I for one thank you. The rest of the assholes are free to depart the premises so that we may navigate quickly and in peace.

I swear, I cant thank you and the team enough for all that you are doing to make OD the best place to be.
@sillysillysandee You’re welcome!

Yup noticed it’s going much faster today.

Thanks for your hard work. I’m still finding it difficult to navigate (although yesterday I couldn’t access the site at all) so hopefully in a few days things will even out.

I am happy to be back and yes it was slow the past days but I don’t mind and I feel sorry for the complains of some people who seem not to understand how difficult it sometimes is to make everything work well. When a very big site like Proximus, Belgium’s largest telecommunications company, experienced major technical problems
with their servers etc two weeks ago, no TV, no phone, no internet for thousends of people for almost a day, and then, a couple days later they had similar problems, then one understands it’s not that easy to avoid a sudden shut down or slowness.
Good luck with the site! I
@edelweis thanks very much!

I am so glad that OD is back! My diary is still restoring and it has been 48hrs. Is there any ETA for how long they are going to take? I am chomping at the bit to go through, reread all of my stuff and to update! Thank you. =)

Ah I’m not very tech headed, but I was thinking something of the sort would be the answer( among other things that I didn’t think of during beta testing, meh)
And While I may bitch and complain and give you a lot of crap… ok I’ll try not to, but, you do understand why I feel the way I do. But I shall try to be patient, but I don’t think my mouth will be able to be shut <3
@gilraent_1 of course, totally understandable!

Out of curiosity, what are some relaunch stats? Average reclaimed per day? Average new per day? How many people are back in all?
Also, would love to see Random and Readers Choice be revived in future upgrades. I also like the simple design and style.
@pilgrim thanks I’m glad you like it! We are thinking about adding Random and Readers Choice in the future, we will see!

It is good to be back and I can’t wait to start making entries and looking around now the site is working again. I am missing the entry manager though. Going back through entries individually in order to delete/private them is going to take an unfeasably long time.
@rodge if you’d like the staff to make all your entries private, you can message them through the Contact Support link and let them know – they can do it for you.

It is so great to be back. I cannot wait to see my old entries again.
And to continue where I left off. I never could find a community as great as the one that was here. I know that was a different time but I hope somethings have remained the same.
@d-_-b I hope so too! Welcome back!
