Open Diary Help

Good evening (or good morning),

It’s 1:35 a.m., so I don’t feel much like filling this box up. The good thing about working late like this is I got to watch Two Towers one and a half times through while I typed. At the moment, Saruman’s screaming out his window again.

Time for bed.

This is a good one, I think. I’ve finally completed enough of the new Help system to make it actually Helpful, so I am releasing it for public consumption.

You can find the new Help system by clicking the Help menu (imagine that) in the menubar, and then clicking “Help & FAQ”. A new window will open with the Help system, and it’s pretty self-explanatory from there.

There are still some things that need to be added to the Help files, but I felt that it had come far enough to be useful. I’ll be updating it with more information in the near future. I’m also still learning my way around RoboHelp (a fine product, in my opinion), so you may find links that are goofy – they’ll get fixed.

My hope is that this will help answer many of the questions that I now receive notes and e-mail about – and thus reduce the number of messages I have to sift through every day (not that I don’t love getting mail and notes from everybody). So in the future, if you have a question, please check the Help files first. If you don’t find the answer there, then let me know.

First, I LOVE that it opens in a new window. VERY SMART! Second, I hate to be a nudge, but where is the info about importing diaries? I am appreciate the note answer to my e-mail, but I have lost the place where importing diaries lives and I cannot find it again. Thanks!

Oooh, it’s not everyday that I see you update this late. I’m envious of you. That movie ROCKS. Isn’t Smeagol/Gollum the cutest thing? (The diarist formerly known as A Bare Necessity, A New Me, It’s Just Alanna, The Ice Queen .. and 4908 other aliases. Thank God I’m keeping this one. Haha.)

Okay, maybe it’s just me…and maybe I’m doing something wrong…but when I got to “Help” I get a dropdown menu for “The Rules”, “Contact the Staff”, “Open Diary Utilities”, and “About Open Diary”…but no “Open Diary Help”.

I love your little box comments, so refreshing to see you let your hair down and also get insite to your philosophies.

Since yesterday afternoon I have been unable to save my entries. I used wordwax in the end to post my entry but because I use chapters, the entry didn’t save in its chapter, or with a subject. When I tried to change this I found I couldn’t edit & save my entry either. Instead, I just keep getting a page which says HTTP 550 Internal Server Error. I can’t use the contact form either. Same error.

just FYI. hopefully no one will get confused, but you never know. the help menu has an option for “Open Diary Utilities.” i would think people would know this is the right place to look…but you might either want to mention that, or change it to ODHelp, or what have you. 🙂 thanks for all you do.

i’m bombarding you. sorry. in looking for this new ingenius help menu… i couldn’t find it at all. i’m sorry. maybe it’s me?

ryn:yeah, but he’s also in the needing a time-out once an hour phase too! LOL. Independence is great, until he’s once again trying to put on my make-up or wash himself while sitting on the couch with a cup of water, the bath scrubby and soap! 🙂

ahhh…i’m glad i’m not the only one who visits middle earth while programming in the wee hours of the night.

Actually what I usually end up doing with my site is sending people the link to the help page with the answer to their emailed question. At least I don’t have to keep retyping the same stuff over and over again.

Hi There =) I like the new option, looks like it took some time — so thank you for the work. I wanted to add a little snipit, in saying that “Yahoo! Pictures” does not allow hot linking. The image URL’s do not typically end with a .gif/.jpg/.jpeg and are blocked when off-site linked. Just incase you wanted to change that before people ask why their pictures aren’t working;)

Im not sure if the email I already sent went through. But there is this diary ( Cutter Queen ) that could be very offensive and hazardous to other people. She promotes ideas to other people on how to cut themselves indirectly. She leaves random notes in diaries she doesn’t even know of, and gets them to come to her site. I would have no problems with her, if she didnt do this, and just left he

r diary to be seen by the people who stumble upon it. I’m not sure if you can do anything about this, but please try if you can. I belive that people should be able to speak their minds, and voice their opinions. But she just talks about a controversial issue in every entry. She writes about intentional mutilation, which could be considered a threat of death to he rself. This in itself, is

completly illegal. Please help!

Is there any way that the site can remember my username and password so I don’t have to unlock my diary every time I come to the site? Thanks!

I’ve already gone to the OD Help menu for this, and it hasn’t done anything. I left a complaint about a diary that is vulgar and sexually explicit. The diary user’s name is “Sex-Stories” and they are writing an explicit story about a young girl that is kidnapped and raped. I find this incredibly offensive and I hope that something will be done about it. Thanks.

Listen, I don’t know if there is anything that you can do about these people…but I never said or did anything to them but try to make friends. I am being attacked by numerous diarists and it is getting out of hand. Tell me…is it a crime to like to cut yourself? Because that is what my diary is about, and many many people come willingly to my

diary and tell me to kill myself and cut deeper and that I’m a freak and stuff. I thought you didn’t promote insulting, degrading, or offensive notes. Could you please do something about this, it is getting out of hand.

And please note that I have not broken any of your diary rules. I have never insulted anyone who didn’t first attack me. I haven’t reported any of these kids before because I truly believe that everyone is entitled to their own opinions. But now this is just getting out of control. Is there anything you can do about this?

Please, look over my diary and tell me if there is anything offensive about it and I will delete it at your command, just don’t delete me without giving me a chance, please. I don’t understand what I’ve done that is so wrong. There is a witchhunt going on on YOUR website, please…isn’t there any way you can get these people to stop harassing me?

i still get the old diary menu instead of the new one. My menu has been doing this for awhile. It worked for about 1 week then it went back to the old menu. 🙁

So you’re also a Tolkien fan? I have both SE DVDs, and watch them too. I like the one about having nothing to write in the box, and “never mind the man behind the curtain.” That was funny. Your entries are fun. Thanks for helping out and answering our questions!

I created my own interest a couple of weeks ago, but I never heard if it was allowed or not. How do we know if our interests we create are approved?

Sorry to keep bothering you…I don’t know if you’re even reading these notes…but the diarist S*U*N***K*I*S*S* has a very nasty diary, with pornographic images. There are 13 year olds on this site!

ryn:it doesnt work. 🙁 I thought it was my HTML coding but then it worked with it.Sometimes the old menu appears or the new one at times.But a good 98% of the time I just get a white bar instead of a menu.

Ok, I have to complain for once.. I love this site, but I cant tell you how tired I am of writing this huge entry or survey or something, and when I go to save it, it tells me “timeout session” and I have to log in again. HOW ANNOYING IS THAT?! I think your limit on how long it stays up there isnt long enough, because sometimes I’ll do surveys but have to walk away for a minute, and when I..cont’d

..come back, finish it, and save it, and it disappears I just wanna kill someone. It’s really irritating and you need to change that. I liked the way the site was before where it didnt log out until you told it to (unless of course you had it there for a couple days or something crazy), and it certainly didnt log out mid-entry. If you leave it idle for ONE MINUTE, it.. cont’d

..won’t save. I know I’m not the only one irritated by this, because I have read more than enough entries where someone is flipping out because they wrote a long entry and now its gone, and you cant retrieve it after that. I hope you’ll fix this problem. Either that, or somehow make it so that your entry saves after you log back in and you dont have to go through writing a new one, all ticked off.

Just in case you might want to know…I got my bill this morning and it had http://WWW.OPENDIARY.COM on it. I am so upset because my husband will now know about my diary and will now wart the He$$ out of me when he sees me on the computer. I thought that it was not going to have OD written on the bill. Very upset about this. 🙁

this is kind of random but that’s kina how i am. what i wanna say is that u should have a section on the homepage for like diarists with the most entries… i think that’d be cool
