New editor is up!
I’m very excited to announce a very large upgrade that we have been working on for some time – the new editor toolbar for writing entries! I want to say many thanks to our Engineering team for their work on this, I think it makes the OD experience so much better!
If you go to write a new entry, you will see this toolbar right away, at the top of the editing space. There are some key things to know about this right away:
- The toolbar is always there, and doesn’t require a right-click to launch (like the old toolbar) – so it shouldn’t interfere with Grammarly or other browser-based spellcheckers you might be using.
- It supports a new Media Manager that will let you manage and re-use images that you upload into your diary – meaning, you can go back and add them to other entries, add captions to them, etc. – so you only have to upload once. (A note here – Engineering will be hooking up the feature image at the top of the page to this as well in the future, meaning those images will get saved there as well.
- Speaking of images, the editor supports sizing and aligning of images in entries – so you can stretch or shrink your images, and you can right-align or left-align them with text wrapped around them if you like (this one I particularly like!).
- Text colors are supported, as well as embedded links and emojis.
- Also, special symbols, and paragraph level formatting for styles.
- One that I really like is the button second from the right, which expands the editor to a full-screen mode, meaning you have the whole browser window to type in.
- Also, also, make sure you click the last button on the right – that expands a second row of buttons for more functionality (like justification, undo, redo, etc.)
- On that second row, there is a “Paste as text” button – for those of you who have had trouble pasting content from Word or elsewhere, try turning this off when you paste, it should solve your problem.
- Also important – this editor supports single line-breaks (like you use when you are writing poetry) – just hit Shift+Enter to get a new single-spaced line.
There are a couple weird things with emoji that we are still working out, but please test this new editor out and let us know what you think!
For those of you interested in such things, this toolbar is using TinyMCE – which is an extensible web toolbar system. Obviously, our thanks to them for building a great product, and to our Engineers for integrating it and making it part of OD!
If you look at your own entry, the words are not breaking at the end of the line and are breaking up words in the entry… it’s doing that in my entries too. You might want to look into that.
Oops posted note below, was supposed to be a reply to this. Thanks!

Hmm what browser are you using? The words are appearing correctly for me in Chrome and Safari.
Looks good here too via an IPad.
I’m using firefox, which is my preference. Up until yesterday I had no issues but I was noticing it on the front page too before today.
@peter_24601 @thediarymaster this is fixed now!
@mauteri you beat me to it Mike, I just noticed when I posted my latest entry. Even the front page looks better. Thanks everyone! 🙂
@peter_24601 @mikeatari thanks!

Thanks for your efforts. I’m a little gray on the paste as text button. I write in Open Office – then past here. I’ve not yet looked at the new editor, so perhaps it will become clear, but when I paste – button on or off?
I think the answer is to turn it off, you should try that.
@thediarymaster Got to finally give it a try yesterday – so very pleased to be able to post an entry without having to delete a line between every-single-paragraph! Wonderful. The new editor is super!

Will give it a go…thank you DM and TEAM 😊

I noticed the improvements before I noticed your post. Things definitely look cleaner and i did notice that right clicks were working. Well done.
Thanks!

Hi, I no longer work on a laptop or computer, and do everything with my iPad. (I know that must limit things here)…. But is there a way to move photos freely and put photos side by side in an entry, or crop photos? Thanks!
The editor should work on iPad, and it provides ways to place and size images (but not to crop unfortunately). We will do some iPad testing and check it out.
@thediarymaster I second that! I use my iphone and ipad more than I use the mac mini.

Hi!! It’s pest Lois again!! Is there going to be a search option like before to find other diarists who were our faves/ friends? T y
Yes, we have a search function built already, but our testing showed that we needed to make some changes to it to protect privacy, so it is currently being re-worked – but will be added back to the site in a future release. Thanks!
@thediarymaster : Thank you so much!!

I need help increasing the size of my text as I type an entry. It’s so little, lol. But, I am 74 and need new glasses, lol. :*) t.y. ~L
Hi @Butterfly4Him – you can increase the size of the text if you click the dropdown list in the editor that says “Paragraph” and then change the text to one of the larger sizes, that will also save the entry with larger text too.
@thediarymaster : Thank you so much DM!! :*)

Ooooh, thank you so much! I was gone for a few weeks since stuff was heating up for me with the class I’m taking and that ate up my free time, but now I have some holiday downtime 🙂 Really excited for the single line breaks, as dorky as it sounds.
That’s a perfectly good thing to be excited about!

Okay, maybe a dumb question, but does HTML not work in the editor? I have an entry I copy and pasted but the HTML isn’t translated, they just display as if they were normal characters. Do I have to actually go in and use the toolbar and highlight stuff every time I want to add formatting? Or should I have used the paste as text option? Can you explain some more what the difference is between having that on or off?
Warning Comment
I like some of the easy formatting options, but is there any chance we’ll get to pick our own color schemes? I used to do that with markup in each entry/profile page, but it doesn’t look like we have the option to not use the editor. It would be nice to select a basic color scheme, though.
I’m so excited to be home!
