New Autosave feature

Hi all, a couple things to discuss tonight:

Autosaving your writing

I’m excited about this one, something the Engineering team has been working on for awhile. As of today, there’s a new feature built into OD, which runs in the background and automatically saves a copy of your work as you are typing. This save is invisible to you, and happens about once a minute while you are writing a new entry.

If something unexpected happens, and you close your browser by accident or lose your internet connection, or something else – your work will still be preserved, and if you come back to the writing page you will see a message asking if you would like to restore your saved work. If you click the button to restore, your work should come back in the editing window, just as it was the last time it autosaved.

I’m glad to be releasing this, because we all know how frustrating it can be to spend a lot of time typing an entry and then have it lost due to some technical problem.

Your diary may be set to Private

When we first imported the old Lifetime members’ diaries into the site to start our testing a few months ago, we set all of those diaries to Private to protect our members. Some of those diaries are still set to private and this is causing some confusion as Lifetime members reclaim their diaries.

If you are seeing that your entries don’t show up on the front page when you post, or your friends are saying they can’t see your diary – this is probably the reason. To fix it, click on Profile on the main menu, and then on Settings and then Diary. On that screen, there is a Diary Privacy setting that you can set to Public, Members Only, Friends Only, or Private.

Speed problems

If you didn’t already, please see my previous entry about speed problems some members are reporting. We are working hard on tracking all of these down so the performance of the site is optimal. If you are seeing performance problems, please let us know exactly what page you are seeing it on and what time of day – that will help us to investigate!

The first 3,000

We crossed 3,000 members this week – over three thousand people have come back to OD since we re-launched and have reclaimed their diaries. I am thrilled by this response, and so glad to have you all here.
