More on Mail Worm and Advertising

I read this recently somewhere, after not seeing it in awhile. Cool, I think.

Buddha’s Teachings

The Eightfold Path, also called the Wheel of Law, contains eight steps for eliminating dukkha (suffering).

  • Right Understanding
Strive to clearly understand the Four Noble Truths. Strive to understand the workings of your own mind.
  • Right Thought
Think kindly of others and avoid dwelling on the past or future.
  • Right Speech
    Speak kindly and truthfully.
  • Right Action
Act kindly toward all living things. Do not be attached to the results of actions.
  • Right Work
Have a vocation that does not harm others.
  • Right Effort
Be determined to cleanse the mind.
  • Right Mindfulness
Be fully aware of what you are doing, always with concern for others.
  • Right Concentration
Intensely concentrate during meditation to focus on being one with any situation

You don’t have to be a Buddhist to be down with that.

A little more information on the e-mail virus I reported yesterday – many readers wrote that they had received similar mail from whatever domain name they use for their e-mail, with identical or similar wording, and an attached file. I also received one for our internal company domain today, saying that the mail administrator was shutting down my account – which is pretty funny, since I’m the mail administrator.

Anyways, for some for information on this virus, please see this Symantec security bulletin.

On another, similarly irritating front, I’ve had several reports about an ad running on our site that goes under the name “Gain something something”. I haven’t seen this one yet, but DiaryMistress ran into it this morning. The ad pops up a dialog box, and when you click “No” it minimizes your browser and won’t allow you to maximize it again. I’ve asked the folks at our advertising company to have that ad removed from rotation as soon as possible.

Which makes this a convenient place to interject something about ads. Believe me, I hate popups and ads as much as the next person. I can’t stand that I have to run them on my site – but the DiaryFamily has grocery bills and college bills to pay. Ninety-nine percent of our diarists use Open Diary as a free service – and for those couple hundred thousand, ads are the only way that the site remains free (which also seems like a great place to add, if you hate ads and can afford a $12 subscription, you might consider upgrading to an ad-free OD Plus account).

That being said, if I could run OD without advertising – I would. At the moment, popup ads are what most advertisers demand – they believe that they have a better chance of grabbing the reader’s attention than banner ads. I tend to disagree – I think popup ads are becoming less and less effective, as people learn to ignore them and block them. However, I’m not the person paying for the ads, so I don’t get to choose them.

On the other hand, when a particularly obnoxious ad like the one I talked about above shows up, I will waste no time in having it removed from the site. There are some lines that I think advertisers should never cross, and messing up a person’s browser is one of those lines.

That was way more information than any of you were probably interested in hearing about advertising.

For the record.. I appreciate your keeping us informed. And your honesty. Thank you.

just as a side note to this… as an FAITHFUL odp subscriber, it irritates me to have pop ups on the main page when i go to it before i sign in. (this just started in the past week) They stop when i sign in, but just coming to the site brings them up on IE. Since there is not a way that i know of to override the ‘time out’ process, it means i’m getting them every few hours. grrrrr.

Thanks for clearing this up. I thought something was up with my PC when the browser kept closing… didn’t see the add in question though, as I have pop up stopper. Thanks again.

well I for one was fascinated as usual. 🙂

This time I liked BOTH parts of your entry :-p

No, that wasn’t too much information. I am glad that you take the time to explain what is going on. Two of my diary friends had trouble with popups playing mischief yesterday on this site. One of them has a Plus subscription which is weird. I got one just before I logged in. Thanks for staying on top of things.

I basically can’t use OD until that ad is gone. I am really not pleased about it. However, I liked how you handled it here, and that actually makes me MORE inclined to go to OD plus. Maybe in a couple months when I graduate and have some money. In the meantime, I would like to know who that advertiser is, so I can boycott their product or service. My popup blocker doesn’t let me see it. Thx!

re your sidebar today-“You don’t have to be a Buddhist to be down with that.” No indeed. I copied it to my Notepad for reviewing. Thanks again.

I had that awful pop up happen when I was buying a subscription for a friend (I emailed you that it won’t process as an OD+, playpal) I had to do a go back on my computler messed up my entire format. No biggie though. Part of the risk you take on the internet. Takes a lot to irritate me . . .

hon, I just dont see why they grouch at you two about the pop-up adds and stuff. If they aren’t curious about some of the products advertised most internet providers have a free pop up blocker these days. It seems funny saying this. It makes me feel so old but.. It’s not like we are back in the old days and couldn’t do anything about them at all. Now days we have a choice. They don’t have to

(cont.) tell you how to run your business. In your place they would probably double the amount of pop-ups & ads to make more profit. Your not trying to make some huge amount of riches off us. I wish you somehow could but your not. Your a good person just trying to pay their bills. But again, this goes back to people always wanting something for free. You got bills, & family. Like everyonelse.

I can understand about the ad like the DiaryMistress ran into. I’d want that info passed on because that would effect business for you. But, the free diaries have to have a way to pay for themselves & if they dont like ads they need to pay. You are providing a service. You are not our best friends. Your service is worth paying for. You have made it so easy to pay. You gave options that are great

And I agree. You do not have to be that faith to agree with those things IYB. 🙂 Have a wonderful day, ok? Those people grouching at you need to remember that this is your business. It may be their salvation/bestfriend/outlet but it is your business. If they want something for free they dont need to be taking it out on you that nothing in this world is free. If they don’t pay for it, you do.

How long until that popup is fixed?!? It’s still doing it. It is really irritating!

Thanks for getting rid of that ad. I aliken popups and ads that actually screw with your browser to be akin to spraypainting someone’s house with an advertisement, or picking the lock to their door so you can put a flyer on their desk. Love OD, couldn’t live without it. 🙂

uh about the pop up thing, yeah im getting that problem as well so id like to know when its going out of rotation so i can USE THE SITE AGAIN i have a very old computer and it is all but crippling my OD thanks

PS i have a pop up killier installed and it is still getting through

yes i am really having a problem with that minimizing thing… except i don’t see an ad first, a little box pops up and says “the web page you are on is trying to close the page” and it asks me if i want to or not. when i click no, it goes right back to minimized again. this is very confusing.

That buddhist stuff rocks! I am a tenth graders and we’ve been learning about all that stuff, rock on 😉

This makes me enjoy my ad-free OD+ subscription even more! This note is simply to say how much I like your “box” comments. Through them you are gradually becoming like the other diarists I read, an interesting individual, no longer simply the administrator of this (much-appreciated) site. I particularly value this synopsis of Buddhist belief. Thank you.

I ran into the same ad yesterday when I was using Internet Explorer. I was trying to test something on my diary by using the OD Reader login, and it ended up resizing the browser. I’ve accidentally clicked “yes” instead of “no” on some pop-ups from various sites, and I actually had to wipe my computer clean from all the parasites. I lost a lot of important things. Then I learned about a wonderful

browser called Firefox. There are extensions that can be added to the browser which allow the user to remove/block anything. All I have to do is right-click when I see a page ad, & add the picture link to my blocked list. There’s also a “click to view” Flash extention that comes in handy for those ads that aim to cause seizures. It also has a popup blocker. http://www.mozilla.org/projects/firefox/

The thing with the browser minimizing and refusing to come back up is happening to me too. I sent in an e-mail to technical problems, not sure of the exact name. But I found this and thought I’d ask here. Is there a way to fix it? Cause I can’t get into my diary. My e-mail address is EG57869@appstate.edu

can you please take the ad off (yes the one mentioned) that cuts my screen and half and will not let me maximize it.

Again, as a paying customer since, forever, it would be nice if I didn’t have to get that first pop up when I try to log on.

This GAIN worm/pop up thing isn’t happening here but is happening at TEENOPENDIARY.com as soon as the page loads. It messes up the whole window.

*bouncies* interesting information. isabel

there are ads that pop up before signing in to OD. and ads that plant spyware. short of a stick of dynamite i no of nothing that removes xupiter, and as for picking it up else here? i never used any other sites for years on this computer. just OD. (due to spyware) and xupiter is embedded in this mainframes software..

thanks! i really hated that ad.

Thankyou again. This is such an efficient service! When I go to University and have more privacy I will purchase an OD+ subscription. Until then it’s impossible as parents lurk and sift through mail, etc etc. Thankyou, for the last time!

I love the Buddist thing you have in the little box. Very “enlightening.” 🙂 Thanks for sharing that.

I understand requiring the ads. I myself am a student, and am short on money. I will tolerate the ads as longas they help the site. Sorry to hear about all those virus and e-mail problems. There are people who just have too much time, and like to make trouble.

I’m so glad that wasn’t just me. I couldn’t figure out how to make it go away 🙁 The Almighty

Thanks so much! I was VERY frustrated when my g/f (this is diarist *velma* typing under her name) told me about this pop-up..I thought it was something she done…

Thanks. That indeed has happened to me, and now my browser acts foolish all the time (even when I’m not on OD). Any clue on how to fix it once it goes bad? BAD BROWSER, BAD!

You might be interested to read this. Most effective if you print out the entirety and take your time browsing through it. But thought I’d pass it along, either way. http://www.accesstoinsight.org/lib/bps/misc/waytoend.html
