Blocking Readers and Other Plus Features

Good morning everyone,

I’ve been getting a lot of notes and mail since my last entry, asking what blocking is, why don’t I see blocking on my menu, etc. So I thought a little refresher on OD Plus was in order.

Reader blocking is an OD Plus feature. It is only available to people who subscribe to OD Plus – if you are using a free diary, it will not appear as an option on your Diary Maintenance menu. What blocking allows you to do is keep a list of OD members that you don’t want to have access to your diary. If you place an OD member on your Blocked list, that person cannot read your diary or leave you notes. If they try to visit your diary, they get a message saying that they do not have access to your diary. If you are an OD Plus member, you can use this feature to block any other member of OD (free or Plus) from your diary. There is no limit to how many people you can have on your Block list.

Some of the other features of an OD Plus membership are:

  • Diary Chapters is a new feature that lets you organize your diary into separate chapters. Readers can travel through your diary in chapter view or in the standard date view. Chapters can be moved around in your diary to change their order, and appear in a new menu on the left side of your table of contents screen. The response to this feature has been very positive, I must say.
  • No advertising – if you are an OD Plus member, you will never see ads or popups on any OD page. Anybody in their right mind can appreciate that.
  • Note History keeps a history of all the notes you’ve left on other diaries, so you can see all of them on one screen (like the screen that shows all notes for your diary, but showing all notes you’ve written).
  • Diary Search lets you search any diary or notes (not just yours, but anybody elses) for words or phrases. If you want to know how many times one your friends has written about breaking up with her boyfriend, you can do a search on words like “scum” or “loser” and find out.
  • Reader Passwords allows you to give a password to another person, to let them read your diary and leave you notes. This means that if you have a private diary or an OD members only diary, you can give a password to somebody who wouldn’t normally have access. A person with a Reader Password can read any of your non-private entries, and leave you notes.
  • Filtering lets you set your diary reading so you only see other OD Plus members, or you can leave it as is and still see everybody on the site (like you do as a free member).

I think this is a great set of features, and cheap too – an OD Plus subscription costs just $12 for six months or $24 for a full year. Just $2 a month buys you all this…but wait, there’s more! If you subscribe now we’ll also include a free set of steak knives (no, just kidding about that part – never mind).

An important thing to remember is that since I merged the OD sites, you don’t have to move your diary anymore to become a Plus member. If you subscribe to OD Plus, you stay here with all the friends you already have – everybody will still be able to visit and note your diary, whether they are free or Plus members.

Anyways, if you want to upgrade your diary to OD Plus, just click the upgrade link that you see on the front page, or the upgrade link that appears at the bottom of your Diary Maintenance menu. You will see a list of the OD Plus features, and be given the option to pay by credit card or by mail.

Coming soon, just in time for the holidays, will be gift subscriptions – you will be able to send an OD Plus subscription to other members of the site.

Okkk…this is great but I’m wondering if you could post a tutorial on using the chapter feature. I know I may sound clueless but I’ve really tried to figure it out. I even posted an entry asking for help and I still can’t. Pleeeeeeeez. Thanks.

is there any way you can make your menu up top transparent so i see the background through it?

I’m confused. This might be a good entry to note with my question. I used to love the Reader’s Choice but it looks like stupid, immature entries are on there now. I thought Reader’s Choice was a OD+ function? It isn’t?

Um. You still haven’t addressed why there have been the same author more than once on RC. There was once instance where the same entry was on the list twice at the same time. Just wondering.

I was wondering if there are ways to block someone people from my diary? If there is away can you please let me know. Thank you.

ok…one last request..i know its bothersome but could you please download shadowkats diary and email it to him. the poor guy would want nothing else for christmas but that. he is begging and pleading. and you know that isnt like him. he doesnt even have to be in the diary..just wants a copy of all the entries and notes. PLEASE!!!!

Anyways is not a word. You sound like a teenage girl! Is this a fake diary? BRUCE! WHAT ABOUT FAVORITES ONLY DIARIES SEEING ONLY THEIR FAVORITES! Come on, this is a great idea. If a person was FO and clicked on a non-fave, maybe the system could prompt “Do you want to add this diary to your favorites list?” or something. Seriously, you oughta hire me. I’m a geeeeeenius!

When adding new chapters, an error screen is showing up. 🙁 I love these chapters! Too bad they’re causing me to be a pain in the butt. 🙂

how do you use the passwords where do you type them in?

I’m curious about a pop ad. “smokers 21 and older”. Every time this ad pops up, it somehow messes with my IE OD screen. I don’t even have to close out this ad for it to mess up what ODer I was reading. Am I the only one having this problem with this certain ad? Just curious.

ive heard 3 different ODers say that they havent been coming up when they post an entry. It’s saying I haven’t updated in like a month, when I did yesterday or the day before. Fix it, DM!

Blocking other diarists is a great thing…what sucks though is if someone’s already blocked you, you can’t block them. And I’ve found when you do searches to block people, you only come up with members of free open diary. BLEH on that.

has the price for a subscription changed? when i first signed up and renewed over the summer, the price was $20, if i remember correctly. oh well–the less i have to pay, the better. ^_^

Have you ever read someone’s diary who really touched your heart? A silly question I suppose but I always find myself wondering about you and if you sometimes randomly read the thoughts of people you created this site for.

I have notices today that there is a new pop up ad that TAKES OVER my computer. It opens my CD drive I didnt believe it till it happened it changed my homepage which has always been OD to there homepage it takes over and I cant do ANYTHING except click it it locks EVERYTHING up! I love my OD but I cant ave that happening. since it happened the first time I get PORN pop up here as well. I have

NEVER gotten porn pop ups at OD and I am sure that was not something you planned. It only happens at OD so i know its not just the internet. I will not stay here IF it cant be fixed. I have been on OD for 3 yrs and was fixing to go OD+ but if thats the kind of advertising you plan then maybe I will have to rethink that. Please fix it I LOVE MY OD…..Misty

Question. If you go from a free diary to a Plus one, would the note history of the notes you made include all the notes you did before you became a plus member? Always, Robert

hi, i have a question, how do i enable the “diarist favorites” link in my profile? it doesnt show up and i cant figure out how to do it.

For easy access.Granted, the guy is, in all likelihood, mentally ill.But that’s not my problem. And the OD community doesn’t really need to see his bare ass, waggling about on screen.

Although I’m a “cheapie” arse and don’t pay, I just wanted to say what a great job your doing now for the FREE part of OD 🙂

I had a diarist on my favorites list but when I logged in today, their name was no longer there. Does this mean that they have blocked me or that they have deleted their diary?

I still can’t get into my diary emiliasdance even though I have written your help desk about it several times. I type in the diary name and password and it tells me that I have the wrong password. Please help me.
