Done, over, finite!

<yawn> It’s such a relief to have that event behind me. It turned out a bit different than I expected. We had less help than was expected and at the end of the night it was DH and I to clean up, put things away, close out the register in the gift shop, and in general police the whole building to make sure things were as they should be. We began at 9:00 p.m. and signed out at 9:45 p.m. Home by 10:00 p.m., showered and in bed by 11:30 p.m. Up today and still in my nightgown — may not get dressed at all today. I told DH on the way home that I was going to ‘crawl back into my hole for the next few days’. LOL (translation: won’t go anywhere — may not dress — will eat when hungry and do what I want while my body rests).

The event went very, very well, considering. I did have enough food, and we served over 200 guests. Not everyone took a plate and that’s how I counted the number of people. I had bought three 100 pc. packages of plastic 6" plates and we were well into the third package at the end of the evening. Went through one case each of the white and red wines. I received numerous compliments on my appetizers with many questions on how I prepared things. One woman asked if I had a catering business and I told her that in another life I had a catering and cake decorating business. The last cake I made was a wedding cake for my niece — a 3 tiered affair with side sheet cakes. The tiers were carrot, chocolate and white. That was 30 years ago. Amazing how time flies. In that other lifetime I took classes on catering and cake decorating, and was always making a cake for someone, or helping with parties and receptions. My crowning moment before my niece’s wedding was making the decorated sheet cake (a full sheet cake, mind you, that is equal to four 9"x13" cakes), for my catering instructor’s retirement party. I also made some of the appetizers for the party. 

It’s a gorgeous day today — in the 70’s outside and quiet and comfortable inside. Yesterday afternoon I took a plate of assorted appetizers over to the next door neighbor. She’d given us a box of 19 felt blocks that had trains silk-screened onto them.  

Our neighbor’s husband used to belong to the Eastbay Model Engineer Society and I’ve been corresponding with some of the current members, trying to find out more about the source for these felt blocks. I think I’ll eventually just frame them the way they are. The neighbor also gave DH a G scale boxcar and a G scale locomotive, which was extremely generous of her. She’s been a good neighbor and thinks the same of us. She and I went to an estate sale this past Friday morning. It was the home of a LB, a woman who had been active in the local Tehachapi Loop RR Club for many years. LB lost her son to a lung infection several months ago. Come to find out, his lung infection came from exposure to mold in his new to him, recently foreclosed, home. He was also a member of the local RR club and was ‘into’ model planes and cars. There were a number of airplane and car model kits in one bedroom, along with what appeared to be framed, signed photographs with some sort of memorial pin. I bought a 9"x13" bake pan, a couple of cookie sheets a candy thermometer, and a teflon safe pancake turner. It was kind of sad, walking through the house and realizing that LB was gone and wouldn’t be back. They flew her by air-ambulance to Dallas, TX, where she was met by an ambulance and taken to a hospital there in Dallas. I’m glad I said my goodbye to her during our last event at the Rec. Center — she was at a table with other members of The Loop RR Club.

Not a lot going on right now — I’m going to close this and go finish a book I’ve been reading.

Glad it was so successful!! I do a big feast for Christmas breakfast and Thanksgiving and I have NO desire to nor ever have had the idea that I could make a licing at it. I’m so impressed with your talents and God Bless the people in the baking and catering business. Most people want caviar catering for bolonga and cheese prices. Hats off to you my dear. Rest and read.
