Animal classification
When I was in ninth grade my teacher had us go to one of 4 animals that we felt best represented us. There was a sloth, tiger, turtle (maybe) and an eagle.
I chose the sloth at that time, because I was and still am obsessed with sleep.
My teacher said no, I was no sloth. I was an eagle.
WHy an eagle you ask? I circle from the outside watching, observing, and learning the situation. I see all, know all, hear all. Then when the oppertunity is correct, I swoop in and attack. Eagles are birds of prey you know.
Why bring this story up now?
I feel like it is relavent to the school and myself right now. I am observing, gathering inforamtion right now… But the strike will happen. This time someone is messing with my eggs, and that simply will not do.
The school is telling me my child has too much of an imagination to have autism, and therefore they do not feel she qualifies as to having a disability under the state law.
Ahhh but my friends, this eagle happens to almost have a degree in this field. And wouldn’t you know it I know how to research almost anything.
There are several studies out of England which suggest that girls have more of a compulsion to be social than boys, and have imaginations, almost to an obsession. They get lost in their made up worlds of make beileve. Live in books, or shows, or enviroments they have created.
There is also evidence to support that by having this trait they have typical female horomones, and are at less risk of devolping a gender idenity disorder. I found this incredibly fascinating really.
Other things to come out. She can hold it together just long enough to make it through school, and then freaks out at home… They feel this is acceptable. I do not.
They said she is disqualified from speech because she needed an 85 or lower She scored an 86. I am asking for an independent evaluation to be done, by a third party.
Samara is begging me to homeschool again, and I am considering it. It would make my schedule much more tollerable. She wants to stay in therapy forever, which breaks my heart because she will be cut off in a few weeks.
She will start ABA soon, Obama signed it into law last week. That should help. The aba therapist is going with me to the meeting on Tuesday, and hopefully she will shed some insight to them… I am just so over this stupid school. SO many other parents dont have to fight, or dont know they should.

85 or under, huh? How convenient she scores an 86. Yeah, like that wasn’t “fixed”. Your school sounds just horrible and ridiculous! I wonder what they would say about Evan. I think I would consider homeschooling her again, especially if you are willing and able. At least until a better option comes up. Obviously this school doesn’t have her best interests in mind.

I wonder why they’re fighting you so much on giving her what she needs? It seems like they are basically saying she’s ‘fine’ and that just needs discipline or something… like she has melt downs because she’s a brat rather than actually having issues. They seem to be acting as if you just want something wrong with her. I can’t imagine how hard this is for you. I hope things work out.

I hate how schools (well most places, really) have this arbitrary cut off set in stone when they don’t take into consideration the whole child’s needs, or where she’d be able to benefit from Speech. At the schools we’ve been to, it seems like Cody’ll NEVER get out of speech. His articulation of url sounds and r sounds is hideous.

Is Speech Therapy something she can get outside of school with your insurance? I know Cody was going to a facility for a while, a few times a week, outside of school but I had to stop… even though the insurance paid without issue… maybe her pediatrician can get her a referral for one (our was through mental health for some reason… probably because our PCM sucked).

I can not imagine how frustrating it must be for you both.

I didn’t know they were cutting her off. Is it completely (like- no insurance at all) or just for certain care? How frustrating!! I’d ask for her to be re-evaluated by a different speech person. Some of that really seems to be more subjective, especially if the tester is more lenient on things she lets slip. I’m sorry that this continues to be a struggle. It shouldn’t be that hard.

RYN: No problem! You may get them in several smaller boxes. I figured that someone ought to use them!
