This evening as I left work, the sun had set and the storm clouds blowing in from the ocean were glowing red and yellow in the the last throes of the light. Cranes ten stories high were jet black against the clouds and the cargo ships beneath, stacked high with containers, were awash in the lights of commerce. A lone pelican skimmed the roofs of office buildings and dived into the murky waters where the Los Angeles River flows into the waters of the port. As I passed beneath the Queensway Bridge, my work mind gave way and I followed the path of least resistance for the drive home, turning left here, right there as if on auto pilot. By the time I got home, the streets and clouds and ocean were all darkness but for one long thin band of lighted sky far away at the horizon, a million miles away, the last band of light for this early January day in the year 2014.
