The Nightingale Pledge
The Nightingale Pledge, originally created in 1893 by a committee chaired by Lystra Gretter, is traditionally cited by nursing graduates during Honors or Pinning ceremonies. Variations of this pledge exist and the one included below is the one generally recited by nursing graduates. The Nurse’s Pledge accompanies the Candle lighting segment of the ceremony
“I solemnly pledge myself before God and in the presence of this assembly to faithfully practice my profession of nursing. I will do all in my power to make and maintain the highest standards and practices of my profession.
I will hold in confidence all personal matters committed to my keeping in the practice of my calling. I will assist the physician in his work and will devote myself to the welfare of my patients, my family, and my community.
I will endeavor to fulfill my rights and privileges as a good citizen and take my share of responsibility in promoting the health and welfare of the community.
I will constantly endeavor to increase my knowledge and skills in nursing and to use them wisely. I will zealously seek to nurse those who are ill wherever they may be and whenever they are in need.
I will be active in assisting others in safeguarding and promoting the health and happiness of mankind.”

Here I am in my white nursing uniform and cap on my graduation day. My two sisters (pictured behind me) were allowed to pin the cap on me istead of my nursing instructor. I was very honored to have my sisters participate in this very special day. I’m about ready to accept my diploma or was it my academic in excellence award–too many years ago for me to remember.
Nursing is in my blood, spirit, and heart I wouldn’t want to do anything else in life. Making a difference in another persons life is what matters the most to me–this is why I’m here on earth to make it a better place.
Awesome!

We went to the baseball game last night & they recognized Nurse’s Day. Pretty cool, though I don’t think JR even knew about it.

We didn’t do the nurses cap when I graduated. I thought it would have been kind of special, but they stopped doing it at the school I graduated from a few years back. By the way, I think I found your diary through somebody elses and became interested…just in case you’re wondering. 🙂

I was one semester from graduating with my RN – twenty years ago. Then life interfered (hubby was transfered to Germany) and I ended up with a business degree and in HR. To this day my husband asks me WHEN I’m going back into nursing *g* Good for you – you picked a most noble profession. I’m hoping my daughter will go into it.

Wow! I remember my nursing graduation and ceremony. We used the first of the pledges that you had there. And our instructors capped us and pinned us at the ceremony. I, too, love being a nurse.
