Today we (020) played the first team game of the season. We travelled by car to Tilburg to play against TDV, a team we’ve lost to 11-9 the previous year. Since one of our players quit, we were even less of a favourite this year. The draw wasn’t that good either. One of our best players played against one of their very best players and grandmaster, and lost horribly. One of our players that plays very passively and always goes for a draw played against one of their lesser players, and lost as well. Our youth player played a good game right until the very end, but then he lost in a position that was very easy. A terrible mistake. He sometimes has to choose between draughts and badminton and I fear that this is very demotivating. It is not farfetched to assume that he won’t be playing team games anymore.
The game I played today was OK. I have to get used to being considered a player that others are afraid off. Even players with a ranking of 1150 points play passively and are very satisfied with a draw against me. Today I had to make a choice between gaining a slight advantage or creating a difficult position for both, with more risk and more mistakes possible. I chose the latter, but he didn’t make any mistakes for me to take advantage of. As a team, we were a couple of points behind, which meant that I had to take chances to win. My opponent offered a draw, which I declined. The position on the board was a draw by that time, but I still tried for about an hour. My opponent stayed focused, however, which meant that after more than 5 hours of play I had to resign myself to a draw. The team lost 13-7. Now we have to try to win the home game a fortnight from now.
The positive thing today was the win of our second team. They have to play without me this year, since I’ve been promoted to the first team, and could therefore have a lower chance of avoiding relegation, which is the main goal of both teams. They managed a nice 12-8 win in a derby against another Amsterdam based team.
