Now let me tell you about something joyous that happened about a month ago. My brother got married! He had two different kind of ceremonies on two different days. The first was for very close family only. Her and his father and mother, her sister, his brother (me) and two close friends. The ceremony was led by another close friend, who acted as high priestess in a pagan wedding ceremony. We were shrouded in the colours of the rainbow and the loved ones were in white with flowers. For the ceremony, especially, my brother had bought a LOTR sword. There was an alter with all kinds of ceremonial objects and, of course, candles. We all carried candles in our respective colours. Mine was red. The ceremony started by one of the parents bringing their child from within the house outside to the circle. Then the priestess called on the sun god and on the elements etcetera. It was all very interesting and a very good way to start of a married life; a good way to bond with each other. Afterwards we re-enacted the ceremony in part, for the pictures. Then we had dinner and some of us had prepared speeches and there were tears. The family of the bride is certainly very nice. The next party at their house is for Halloween. We’ve already started the preparations.

Nine days later they got married for the law. They did everything as you would expect in a traditional wedding. She was beautiful in white. He had a suit and carried an ornamental walking cane. We threw rice, they released white doves, he picked her up at her parents’ in a two-horse carriage. The public servant had a speech prepared with many references to Star Trek, which was appreciated by all. After, there was a party for a lot of people. We were drawn into a sketch and had to sing a funny song about the newlyweds. Our family would never do such things, since we’re not spontaneous, but her family would and tried to loosen us up. One of the highlights of the party was the professional storyteller that was hired. We had seen him several time before on fantasy festivals and now he had adapted a well known story especially for this occasion to tell. With a happy end. This storyteller is great. He tells it with such fiery passion that the entire room, of over 60 people, was quiet for the entire story of about half an hour. We all wanted to stay quiet to hear what would happen next, and we had to be quiet because he doesn’t use a microphone.

Another  ‘tradition’ at weddings seems to be that always someone has to get drunk. This time it was my father, which was also the reason he and my mother left early. I also had to leave a bit before the end because otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to get home easily. The location for the party was perfect, beautiful, but not very friendly for people using public transport. Everyone received a present at leaving: a CD with songs played at the party, which was a mix of all the newlyweds’ favourite songs (a lot of Beatles’ songs) and a swan, which was the theme of the wedding. Swan apparently mate for life and when his mate dies the other swan usually also dies from a broken heart.
