True Confessions
I have read so many surveys here where one of the questions says something along the lines of
"Tell me something about yourself that is quirky/embarassing/odd/unusual."
I rarely do surveys – and coming across that dreaded question is one of the reasons why. I can never seem to remember anything quirky/embarassing/odd/unusual about myself. I am the epitome of usual, it would seem.
But then last night, it struck me. AHA! NOW I remember what is quirky/embarassing/odd/unusual about myself. And so, in the true cooperative spirit of OD, I am posting my confession here. Please take this as a blanket answer to all survey questions along this line.
I have a fear of spores. Yep. You read it right. Spores. Not really spores themselves. Just things that are spore-like. Spore-looking. Spore-ific.
You can stop laughing now. No, really. It’s not THAT funny. For nearly as long as I can remember, this has been a terror that I live with. Back in the 50s – the original Superman TV show…….that’s the first encounter I remember with my spore-o-phobia. There was an episode where Superman (in all his black and white televised glory) went into a room that had an entire wall filled with pipes. The pipes were stacked so that you saw the open ends of them. And the alternately went in and out, in and out, in and out. And that TERRIFIED me. Pipes. A stack of holes, as it were. Really. Come on – I STILL remember it. It had to be pretty traumatic!
And then there was a Star Trek episode where they breathed in spores from a flower……and I’m sure something horrible happened, but I had to quit watching.
That’s all right. I can hear you now. "Is she for real?" See you shaking your heads in disbelief and condescending amazement. You watch too much TV Sunshine. Where were your parents? Why weren’t they monitoring?
Sadly, it is not just a television phenomena. Getting behind a delivery truck bearing bottles of water is traumatic. Look at that guy – he’s probably being sucked to his death through that opening in the spore wall.
And those cars/trucks/motorcycles with the fancy-schmancy multiple tail pipes? The stuff that nightmares are made of. Spores.
Really. I will face armed and drugged teenagers all day every day…… but the sight of these pictures is enough to send me to my bed…..
Don’t you find that creepy? Ewwww. Look at all those little holes…..with things poking out of them. Evil things….just waiting to take over the world…..
And this one….all the little soldiers lined up……in neat little rows….shudders!
So there you have it…….my quirky/embarassing/odd/unusual confession. Just doing the photo researching for this entry will probably send me into therapy for weeks.
You know, it’s a wonder my children turned out as well as they did…..
If you know what started it the phobia should go away. I remember reading about that in a psych class. Was able to solve a problem I had of occasionally gagging on water. Tried for days to think of what caused it and finally did. As a small boy, my mom gave me a very bitter pill. it got stuck on my tongue and several glasses of wter followed. I’ve never gagged on water since.

I do remember hiding under my bed a few times as the walls closed on Jimmy and – whatever her name was. The lady reporter….also remember being terrified that my mom’s pressure cooker would explode the entire house. Oh, and that tornadoes would sneak up on me if I didn’t stay glued to the tornado watch map on TV!

Both of those two last pictures really creep me out. It’s all too alien looking for me; like something out of a Stephen King story. RYN: I remember seeing him on Buffy and later, didn’t he have his own show? Angel? Whatever, I never watched either show and I’m not even sure why. I love all things vampiric and yes Ma’am; that fella would make one fine undead dude. I think too, that he’seven better looking now than he was back then. Purrrrrrr. 🙂

gee and I thought the pictures were cool.

Ooh Im with you on spores, I hate to see mushrooms growing, but I love to eat mushrooms, but seeing them grow gives me the creeps. Go figure that. ryn; thank you, all prayers are needed and apppreciated.

Now I am going to have bad dreams tonight about the spores you have shown!!! And I a don’t think I can make that loaf of yeast bread tonight either….YUKKKK!

In Star Trek they found harmony and contentment (at least until Kirk brought them back to reality!) how could you have stopped watching that?!?!? 😉 Good to know you’re “usual” in all other ways. 🙂

ahahaha.. what creepy pictures! ok, i can see where my spore-ific picture of acorns might kinda gross you out, too. lol that first one up there kinda looks like an unripe pineapple someone took and did the unspeakable to, with little foreign objects… that’s just wrong. and the second one, is that some disease manifesting itself to take over the planet? hehe 🙂

now the guy with the water bottles, that looks kinda normal, but his arm has disappeared into….???

All things considered, it took real courage to post those shots. Not having that phobia, myself, as soon as I saw the second picture I thought, “Pimento olives wearing feather boas.” That probably partly answers the question about what’s odd & quirky about me…As for embarrassing, the extent of my squeamishness ranks way up there.
