Travels With Sunshine: Findiing Old Florida

One of the things that I have been nostalgic for is the Florida I remember from years past – "Old" Florida.  Old Florida had character, personality and charisma.  Old Florida was not pasturized, homogonized and filled with clone restaurants, carbon copy malls with twinned stores, or plain vanilla people.  Sis and I have been talking about this and have decided that we want to go in search of Old Florida to see if any vestiges of it still exist in this oh so modern and advanced place we live in now.

As a first step in that process, Saturday we set off for Homosassa Springs.  We both fondly remember trips to this park from our childhood as calm, wonderfilled journeys into the native ‘wildlife’.  For a wonder – it is still open and has not been converted to an amusement park, complete with overpriced admissions, wild rides, and overcrowded parking lots.  We didn’t know what we’d find, but hope springs eternal…

My expectations soared as we came up next to this fellow en route to the Springs:

Yes!  Take one glance at this "motorcycle" and you KNOW = there are still people of character alive in Central Florida!  Not only PEOPLE of character….but in Spring Hill look what we found sitting conspicuously in a barber shop parking lot:

Just a very short bit up the road…we found his Daddy, cleverly disguised as a Mechanic’s garage…

And so our spirits soared even higiher – how could Homosassa Springs NOT be everything we remembered…everything we hoped for when there were still such wonderful splashes of originality alive in the world?  (Of course, we had to drive nearly 2 hours away from the "big City" to find it….but find it we did!)

Still grinning and celebrating our ‘luck’, we pulled into the parking lot at Homosassa Springs:

The marquee said come see the Managees…and there was a wonderful Manatee mural on the outside wall.  Sis went up to ‘pet’ the Manatees!  The parking lot and building still looked delightfully old and a little run down.  No fancy flashing signage.  No scrolling neon signs….

In we went to find a dusty gift shop, and a delightfully inefficient system for buying tickets.  Not only that, but tickets were only $9.00 (but Sis had a AAA card that got them down to $7.50!).  We secured tickets and walked out the back door of the gift shop….and filed onto the waiting pontoon boat.  This boat would take us to the main park.  Oh yes!  This was exactly as we had remembered!  Patiently we sat on the boat and awaited departure.  While sitting there we learned that the park, which had once had private owners, was now owned by the State of Florida – an official state park.  As such, the animals housed there are only "native" to Florida.  All the monkeys, panthers and white tigers that had been previously housed there had been relocated.  Well – there is one exception, but more on that later.  Additionally, part of the springs is now used as a dispensary to rehabilitate inujured Manatees.  A safe place for their recovery from injuries unwittingly visited on these beautiful gentle giants by speeding and careless boaters.  Sis and I looked at each other with big goofy grins – how much more perfect could this day get?

And so we rode the boat to the ‘other side’ enjoying the view every single moment…

We reveled in the sight of rarely seen native birds, turtles, fish and even gators.  A heavenly oasis right there … just for us!  All too soon the ride was over and we were at the other side…. facing a delightfully hokey sign which was EXACTLY as I remembered it from some35 years ago (well, maybe they’ve painted it since then…but it’s the same – I swear!!!)….

After pausing to argue about who had to get in the picture this time…. I lost and Sis took the picture.  Then we went off to explore the wildlife walk and the rest of the park and springs.  It was wonderful!  Everything we had hoped for!  We saw the beautiful clear springs, Manatees and birds and animals native to Florida.  We walked the boardwalk.  Our pace was our own – we stopped when we wanted.  We enjoyed what we wanted.  There was no pressure to do it all and see it all.  This was another time, another place.  We saw native bobcats, river otters, bears and native birds – including an endangered crane who is waiting for a mate.  The flamingos (which are not technically NATIVE to Florida….although any species that has lived and bred in the state successfully for 10 years in then considered to be native…) are the most tempting to photograph…

But this fellow was also charming in his own way….and has quite a story as well.

His name is Lucifer and he is a hippo.  Yes – a hippo.  Don’t go running to check your wildlife books.  Hippos are not native to Florida, by anybody’s imagination.  But Lucifer has special dispensation.  You see, when the state wa

s busy farming out the non-native animals everyone was happy…UNTIL they got to finding a home for Lucifer.  Lucifer was THE PARK HIPPO!  Everybody loved Lucifer and the hue and cry was raised when it came to send him packing.  The state was begged to make this one (not so) little exception.  The state refused.  People were frantic.  The governor was beseiged and beseeched….and a solution was found.  Lucifer was made a citizen of the state of Florida by the governor.  As a CITIZEN, lucifer was now a NATIVE – and the park could keep him.  Happy people, happy Hippo.

After spending a couple of hours wandering through the park, Sis and I were happy and ready to depart.  And it was lunch time.  We remembered a little building we had seen just back down the road a bit with an overflowing parking lot.  Emily’s 50’s diner.  And that’s where we headed.  It was WONDERFUL.  It looked every bit the part of an old time family restaurant.

We had the BEST hamburgers, fries and cole slaw that we’ve had in forever!  And the whole bill….$15.00 including the tip.  We headed home full of good food and good feelings.

And so begins the summer Travelogue I think.  I will be working this summer (forgot to mention that to you , didn’t I?  heh.  Yep.  Summer school…but only 3 hours per day – 9-12.)  But when Sis and I can make our schedules mesh…we’ll continue looking to recapture pieces of the Old Florida that we miss so much.  I’ll be happy to take you along, if you’d like!

Oh I’ll have to come back and read and see the pics–I think I may remember the “old” Florida you mention–my aunt and uncle had a motel there when we went to visit in the 60s–pre Disney World–we got to go through a hurricane–I’ll have to research which one, but it was absolutely the best of times as a family trip!

May 30, 2005

That looks like a cool trip! We passed through places like that but I didn’t think to take pics. I’m slow that way. Oh and YAY, I think that is the first pic of you I have seen! :o)

May 30, 2005

The way you talk about it, it’s almost like being there with you and your sis.

May 30, 2005

The last time I saw Florida it was 1958 and you brought back every wonderful moment of the trip. Gaudy, extravagant in its bounty, beautiful, different than any other place on Earth, and you get to call it home. RYN: I would call this trip “doing something” wouldn’t you? LOL

May 30, 2005

Yeah, me too… can I come..? I love finding things the way they were 🙂 KC’s dad told me how he remembered Orlando being great swathes of citrus groves (he was brought up in Lakeland) before Disney took over completely.

May 30, 2005

Damn…I miss Florida! LOL Hugz

Hippo! Heh. Go here: http://www.pasa.ch/ASA/Pages/PoPo/fun.htm With a grin…

I’m sorry, maybe it’s too many episodes of Flipper burning through my mind, but when I look at Florida and it’s ever glades, say nature, I envision strip malls and concrete..The days of running barefoot at Coco beach are probably over aren’t they?

the best meal you will ever eat is at a place here in town called Johnnies. Onion Burgers, with or without cheese. Actually I like the cheese on my fries..but they are so good. The place is tiny. measure your bedroom and divide by 2. I don’t even have to know how big the bedroom is..I know how big Johnnies is..it’s a cross between a bedroom and a walk in closet..

I’ve never been to Florida. This trip sounds great. I love the story about Lucifer the hippo. I’ll be looking forward to reading more travelogues.

My only flipper story. 1964. Flipper and I Dream Of Jeanie. Saturday nights right. on NBC.. the laundry mat, 2 blocks from our house had a huge color tv. we didn’t. So I asked my dad once, if i could go down there and watch TV. he says, thats for people doing laundry, here take this basket and these quarters and SPEND the quarters on the laundry. quick lesson on whites and colors

so at the age of 7. I’m in a laundry mat, washing clothes so I can watch Flipper and I dream of Jeanie without getting yelled at..I get home, clothes are folded, my dad is a freaking hero, my mom is impressed. and best part, mom ups my allowance to five bucks a week..I got paid to watch TV..how good is that?

does it ever bother you that Barbara Eden called JR, Master. on I dream of Jeanie. Ok maybe i’ve read too many back issues of MS..but when a woman calls a man Master. Unless he’s the other half of Maters and Johnson, I really have a problems with it..

I don’t know why they are called boobs. To me a boob is an idiot. What am I missing here ms wolf. tell me. I’m not unenlightened. I have some social training..I can be educated..to me they are. a. breasts, speaking in general and b. none of my business, in regards to anyone’s actual mammanary glands..they have however elicted a fair share of prayer as in “Oh thank you sweet jesus” from me..

May 31, 2005

thanks for taking us this time….. look forward to going again.

That’s good ole florida- one town is filled with every shopping/theme event you can find- an hour down the road- hasn’t changed a bit. Glad yall enjoyed yourself.

This is a great entry. I love the pictures.

Oh these pictures just took me back to the 1970s. Do you remember Sambos? Oh lord,I want to go to Florida even if it is hot and humid. Now,I’m really excited for vacation although we are only going on a mini vacation instead of a full vacation. I do hope to find an old school diner with food that is homey. Love,Monica

May 31, 2005

Yes, More Old Florida Trips! I love the pictures and your story to go with them. And I’m glad to meet you in person…err, in picture.

May 31, 2005

Is it true flamingos are white unless they eat shrimp? I heard that somewhere. RYN: I would love to help with your yard. All my planting is finished for this season and I’m feeling fidgety.

May 31, 2005

BTW, I mean to say it earlier, but I noticed the font change and your pic. :o)

May 31, 2005

woohoo third note, but I was just thinking that when you finally see someone who you have read about like we do here, it’s like, I dunno…I think some mystery is gone don’t you? Unless there have always been pics, but there hasn’t here of you. Either way, youre beautiful and don’t give yourself enough credit!

May 31, 2005

Thank you for sharing your trip with us. I really enjoyed it. Great pictures!

May 31, 2005

RYN: didn’t you ask to read my other diary? I set you up. the name is Dead Rite.

June 1, 2005

lol well that’s very interesting, never met a hippo who’s a real native Floridian before! 😀 And they say the past is dead!

June 1, 2005

Yes please! What fun.

June 1, 2005

just south of g’ville is Micanopy. It was a quaint little town with a place or two where a good southern meal could be experienced. Doc hollywood was filmed there and i’m not sure if it’s been run over or not now. Wildflowers cafe had an excellent steak for reasonable, as in i could afford it on a church teacher salary. 🙂

June 1, 2005

a bit too far out of your reach perhaps near florida’s highest point (the lowest highest point) is Defuniak Springs. (yep, that _is_ where they often send new troopers to train) There is a pond one can walk around (at christmas drive and see all the lights!) and a nifty old hotel and restaurant with hours (dinner (lunch) ends at two i think) no food till supper.

June 1, 2005

I’m trying to recall where toad and i went on the way back from new years at my moms. The springs were cold and the boat not opened, but the fireplaces were going, very nifty old hotel. (shall have to look at my old diary to recall the name.) Glad to have gone on this little trip with you especially since the big plane still isn’t fixed yet, but i did see it with a grey chin. YAY!

June 1, 2005

Oh, yes please! I really want to come with you! This is my sort of holiday – relaxed exploring, seeing lots of animals in their natural state (well mostly! What a lovely story about that hippo!) Where are we going next? And when?

June 2, 2005

Can’t wait for our trip! I just hope we get to see the real Florida as well as the Disneyfied one!

June 3, 2005

Sounds like a wonderful time!!

June 3, 2005

M and I have got to get over there — that’s only about 15-20 miles from us! Had we known we coulda popped over and said howdy. Great pictures.

June 6, 2005

this is a wonderful entry!

June 13, 2005

I’m still smiling after your great entry. I loved the pictures and seeing a part of old Florida. Makes me want to come down for a visit. *sigh* Maybe one day. …I’m glad your doing some R & R. *warm hugs*
