The Company is Launched!

The Cookie of the Month Club is officially in business!  We took our first orders yesterday and today – I am very pleased with our initial results.  We have, so far, collected about $200.00.  Very nice!

The students were thrilled…. but then I wrote them a reality check.

"If this were a REAL company, we’d already be in the hole."

"WHAT?"

"Yep.  We just spent money producing fliers and a promotional batch of cookies.  BEFORE we took any orders, we went negative.  And don’t forget, we still have to buy the supplies for the upcoming cookies."

"HOWEVER…. I am going to be your extremely generous investor.  I have paid for the initial promotional materials.  So… we are at ZERO.  Any monies you make from this point forward, after expenses are paid, are yours.  You can decide what to do with them – as a group – at the end of the school year."

The tight pinched concerned faces loosened up a little.

I continued – "We will buy the supplies for this project separately from class supplies and we will store them separately so you can keep an accurate inventory accounting."

They looked even more relieved.  None of those scumbags in other classes would get to mess with their stuff!  But I wasn’t done with them yet.

"Do you realize now how important it is to measure accurately and to follow the recipe exactly so as not to waste any money?"

Their little foreheads creased with worry again.

A couple of the students want very much to donate their profits to The Spring – a local shelter for batteredwomen and children.  I am very proud of them.  They are worried that more students will want to have a pizza party rather than donate the profits.  I, however, am pretty certain we can work out a compromise.  Oh yes.  Ms. Wolf is SURE of that.  Do their little pea-picking souls good!

I think I am going to enjoy this project very much.

Tomorrow I will be sitting home as they start tearing up floors – hopefully I will be able to do some catching up with you guys then!  Be well!

Congratulations on the success! Do we start referring to you as Famous Sunshine (a la Famous Amos) now?

Or Famous Wolf? 🙂

Well done! I wish I could buy some cookies from you – there’s something about homemade biscuits and cakes…

Sounds such a great idea. they will learn so much (and without realising it, which in my opinion is always the best way to learn.)

Good luck with the Amazing Cookie Company. With a smile…

That is so cool that they are able to get a finance lesson out of that as well as the cooking lesson. I think we focus too much on theory & not enough “real-life” with our kids.

That is such a fantastic idea 🙂
