Spinster’s Books…and My Pics!

Spinster had done this survey in her diary and listed me as one of the people who’s answers she’d like to see.  Well…..I don’t know if my answers will be very entertaining, but here they are, for what its worth.  OH – and I stole her idea for interspersing my answers with pictures.  Not adorable kitty pictures…but a little reminder of why I live where I do….near the water.

1) Total number of books owned?

Currently – around 250….or so.  Owning a book is special to me.  It’s like having a magical treasure box.  When I buy one, I keep it.  And I am SO stingy – I prefer not to lend….except to my father.   BTW…this  has cause my son to curse me roundly over the course of the several moves he helped with…..those magic treasures are HEAVY!  (and – just so you know I am a responsive mother – I have pruned back my book collection CONSIDERABLY at his request….and he has created a built in bookshelf for me – hoping that means I’ll never move again, I’m sure).

2) The last book I bought?

The Song of Susannah by Stephen King, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Universe by Douglas Adams and The Everything Kids’ cookbook by Sandra K. Nissenberg.  It is a virtual impossibility for me to buy ONE book at a time.  If I had unlimited funds…..I would NEVER walk out of the bookstore with less than 8 books.  NEVER.

3) The last book I read?

The Song of Susannah.  I got hooked on Stephen King’s Dark Tower Series when he released the very first book YEARS ago.  Now I have only the last book in the series to go….but its still only available in the $35.00 hardback version and I think I’ll wait until softback comes out in November……maybe.

 3) 5 books that mean a lot to me:

The Chronicles of Narnia Series by C.S. Lewis.  That’s 5 books right there….but I’m going to be a greedy gus and treat them as 1.

The Prophet by Khalil Gibran.   Opened my eyes to a whole different perspective.

Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach.  My mother brought this to my attention…I still have her copy…and I am very attached to the book and the story.

The Ramayana – a Hindu scripture of sorts…the story of Rama and Sita

The World of Pooh by a.a. milne  Pooh is still my favorite philosopher.

5) Five people whose answers I’d like to see: Blevins, fallingdog, arbi, Torin and lama

6)Best gift book.  To give or get?  I love to GIVE books of Rumi’s poetry, The Little Prince and Pat the Bunny (3 different age groups here – OK?  Lol)  To receive?  My awesomely bound and illustrated special edition of The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Thank you for this. I’m adding you to my Faves – something tells me I need you there…

I might have to steal this survey! Best wishes to you.

Love your doggie pics..I’m reading the Gaurdian by Nicholas Sparks–just 4 more pages to read.

Do you like other Stephen King books?? I am a huge fan of all of his work.

June 2, 2005

I love Gibran, C.S. Lewis, and A.A. Milne, too. I’d have to add Jane Austin, though. It’s terribly difficult to narrow it down to just five, isn’t it?!

ryn: Me, too!

June 2, 2005

I re-read Jonathan Livingston Seagull not too long ago. A wonderful little book. The pictures are gorgeous. The dog looks so nobel, and that sunset! Breath taking.

Cute doggie!!!!

Thanks for the note! I love reading you….but now I am hopelessly behind after being away for days….or is it that my behind is hopeless? That too! 🙂 Love the lists of books (I’m a SK fan too, but never got into the Dark Tower series), and I love the curious dog peeking into the big tube.

Great job with the pics and books. Loved the entry. Thanks! 🙂

Beautiful ocean pictures. Is that your dog? He is very regal looking. I cant get into the DarkTower series but I do like most of the rest of his books. Hearts In Atlantis is one of my faovrites.

I love surveys. But,since I probably read one book a year my survey would be boring. ((( Hugs ))) Monica

Wow, I am the worst type of teacher ever. Especially an English teacher. I love to read. I live to read. But I read crap. I read escape novels. I don’t read the classics except in class. I do read contemporary lit that is now deemed good and proper. I LOVE Stephen King. I would love to get The Stand approved for my contemporary lit class. I am going to try, I’m bad. Love pics of dogs.

Oh man, S. King is my secret shame. I too got involved with the Dark Tower books back before it was the Thing . . . I’m really glad I lived long enough to read the (Big Fat Cheater) ending!

June 2, 2005

I have a shelf full of Stephen King. I adore The Stand. This was a great read and the pics are wonderful.

June 3, 2005

Pout. Nobody wants to see my answers. Pooh is one of my favorite philosophers, too.

We share alot in common with books. 🙂

I don’t know if it’s in print–it should be–a book I used to like to give for a gift, Edit Yourself!, it’s a thin paperback and a great quick reference. Thanks so much for your supportive note! She knows I’m here and everything so I just have to adjust. And I think I’m sort of a “last resort.” I appreciate your perspective. Cheers!

thats the saddest legacy of Nov 22nd 63. The What’s replaced the Who. We haven’t had a WHO since..

it’s not just country music. Melloncamps, Hurt so good, sometime love don’t feel like it should, make it hurt so good..? Or Elton’s Sorry Seems to be the hardest word, or Sad songs say so much.. I’m sorry, I realize I don’t always live on the sunny side of the street, but I don’t get the pain..

the best novel by Stephen King is still, The Dead Zone.

Thanks for your note on my mom’s photo. And I’m a non-book-lender too. I was pissed off when (years ago) my SIL loaned out my big Sears Catalog that I’d loaned HER, without my permission. Such perfidy! She also gave away paperbacks I loaned her without asking if I wanted them back. I quit lending her anything.

make a run for the bathroom. I love it when your funnier than I am. no hate fest. I just like taking dig shots now and then. no offense intended..

you are now offically listed as an ICM advisor. Try to care..when does school start? I always like asking teachers that just as summer is starting..cause they always have this look on their face, like someone who’s been deprived of cigerette for too long..What do you mean Start? It’s Summer Time..

June 3, 2005

Actually, the Chronicles of Narnia has 7 books. Which two are you missing? The Magician’s Nephew, and Horse and His Boy? I’m just guessing. With a grin…

June 3, 2005

I’m afraid — very afraid — to count how many books we’ve got…. Great pictures. We’ll have to pop out to the Gulf again; we’re only about 15 miles from the beach. RYN: I had my tubes tied (well, cauterized) in ’83 but, alas, that did nothing for the cramps.

June 3, 2005

Magnificent photos! Also some magnificent books! I won’t comment on which of yours are also favourites of mine, just in case I get round to rising to your challenge and doing the survey myeslf. Just give me another day or two…..or three….

June 4, 2005

This is very cool. Read the entire Dark Tower series over the winter.

June 4, 2005

The Stand is the only King book I have ever made it through and I really liked it.

June 6, 2005

I love the Dark Tower series too. I haven’t read Song for Susannah yet as it was still hard back last time I looked… I love your photos. It looks so peaceful… and warm!!

June 9, 2005

Have you tried reading bach listening to bach? It’s something to try on a reread. 🙂

That does it, SW, you’ve made my favorites!!! Water, Wood, and Wildlife are three of my life’s simple pleasures. BTW, I enjoyed the sunset photo very much.

I liked the solitary tree on the seawall, also…

June 13, 2005

I’ve just bought Stephen King’s “Wolves of the Calla”. *warm smiles*
