Lunacy and…Lunasee!

The definition of lunacy is expecting any child in school in this week before winter break to have an attention span greater than a gnat’s.  It ain’t gonna happen folks.  Since I knew this would be the case (not that I’m so smart – it’s just that last week they only had the attention span of a tse-tse fly, so I figured ‘gnat’ would be about tops for THIS week) I planned to have ALL my classes cook this week.  We are cooking simple things that don’t take much time to cook yet will fill a tummy adequately.  Students with full tummies tend to mellow out a bit.

So…we’re making doughnuts out of refrigerator biscuits – the kind you buy in a tube-right next to the butter and sour cream at the grocery store.  Just cut each biscuit into quarters, drop into hot oil and watch ’em turn brown and puff up.  Then fish them out of the oil and roll them in powdered sugar while still warm…yummers!  Very filling – and the sugar high really doesn’t kick in until they get to their next class.

As I explain the procedure one of my little darlings – let’s call him the Reverend – begins to object.

“Soon after you drop the biscuit pieces into the oil, they begin to brown.”

“I DON’T WANT THEM TO BROWN!”

“Ahem.  After we take them out and roll them in the powdered sugar – they’re all done – cute little yummy doughnuts!”

“THOSE AREN’T DOUGHNUTS!”

“Really Reverend?  Is there anything else you’d like to argue about?  Let’s just go ahead and do it now so it’s all taken care of at once, OK?”

Sigh.  Ms. Wolf is SO ready for winter break.

Today, just 4 days before the end of the semester, I got a new student.  I’ll only have her for 4 days.  Yippee-ky-aaaay!  Now students who are ‘new’ usually take a day or two to scope out the school and teachers before easing themselves into showing their ‘true’ behaviors.  Not this little diva.  When another student said something to her that she didn’t like, she just screamed out “F#*@ YOU!”  One of my ‘regular’ students knew that this was SURE to get this diva bounced out of class on her ear so she tried to intervene.

“Don’t mind her, Miss.  She’s just pissed.”

Oh.  Well that explains everything!  Now that I know that, I’ll just ignore the fact that she screamed out profanity in the middle of my class.  I mean – anybody who’s pissed should be allowed to scream out F#*@ YOU anytime they want to, right?? Of course right!  NOT!

At the end of this class, the students have to put their chairs on top of the tables we sit at so that the custodians can clean.  But not little Miss Diva.

“I don’t put up chairs.”

“Really?  You’ll put that one up.”

“I don’t know how!”

“Interesting.  I guess it’s high time you learned then, isn’t it?  You can stay after with me and we’ll practice.  I have about 45 minutes until I have to leave – how’s that sound?”

The chair got put up

Did I mention that the teacher who is the yearbook sponsor/photographer came in to photograph kids cooking today? And that he mentioned (out loud for the benefit of my entire class of 6th graders) how much the little mini doughnuts they were frying resembled the reindeer balls that they had to eat on Fear Factor last night?  Reindeer Balls!  Oh for Santa’s Sake!

The only thing that’s kept me going so far is the OTHER definition in my title – Luna-see!  Cause I DID!  I did see Luna…see?  Heh.  On a cold and blustery winter’s night (here in Sunny Florida) in the heart of Downtown Disney.  Where we sat and chatted across our plates of rigatoni and pumpkin ravioli and sushi (ewwww, Sam – raw fish!!!!) and the creme brulet sampler platter.  And we got lost in a magnet store and avoided the Virgin Superstore – cause Virgins really are no fun anyway.  Fun only comes with experience.  And we searched high and low – for about 20 seconds for my long haired, kilt wearing soccer player.  And we talked until I put them to sleep….heh.  And I love Luna and Sam.   I wish we lived closer – although I’m not sure Sam would survive if we were!

Now I must go make a salad for tomorrow’s covered plate luncheon at school.  Yep.  I said salad.  No more cooking for this wolfie for a while!

I really gotta go catch up on some noting as well – cause you guys are the best!

It’s good to see you here. I know you are going to enjoy your break…I have to admit I’m jealous. hugs…

Isn’t Luna fantastic? She’s one I’d love to meet in person. Your school experiences will make a great book someday, you know? You sound like a good teacher, just as I knew you would be. Funny, one thing I remember from your diary back when, was when your laptop was stolen. I forget if you ever got it back or not.

LOL. Funny. Yeah, my attention span is ridiculous, and teachers who try to make students work hard right before Winter Break are silly.

B ut what are you doing with the middle bits cut out of the doughnuts? The class may have wonderful suggestions for them. Nice to see you back in print! Alex ps happy Xmas.
