Here a Pup, There a Pup….

I don’t know why I’m here.  I should be devising a plan for next week’s torture of myself.  (Read that as – making lessong plans for the next cooking lessons).  It is somewhat difficult.  We have been in school a good 6 weeks so far….and my funding has not been released.  I am now down to dribs and drabs and odds and ends of my supplies stored up from last year.  No word on when the funds will be released either.  ugh.  I DO have some hot dogs, crescent rolls and cheese……  But I am out of milk and have a new crop of 6th graders who will be wanting to try out Ms. Wolf’s famous ice cream in a baggie recipe.  I am ashamed to admit that I don’t even have enough money in my own bank account to buy 2 gallons of milk.  Sigh.

I do love my daughter – have I mentioned that?  But she can be somewhat……challenging.  I explained clearly, precisely and in WORDS OF ONE SYLLABLE that we have no money.  Zero.  Nada.  Zip. Broke.  SO….we had to throw a birthday party for her boyfriend that included a menu of lasagne, ribs, shrimp and all the fixin’s.  And I had to buy him a present.  And her next request was that I buy her the new pair of Jordans that came out yesterday – for $125.00.  Sigh again.  I suppose that’s my fault for not sticking to my guns previously and saying (and MEANING) no at other times.  She just doesn’t believe me that NO is NO when it comes to money.  (I did manage the party – I did not buy the shoes).  At nearly 50 years of age…..I need to find a second job to finance my high-faluting lifestyle.  You know what I mean….the lifestyle where you actually eat on a daily basis.  Grumble.  Still – for this moment right now, I am fed and clothed and fat and happy.  What else is there, right?

Perfect segue – what else there is………Is KYA.  (Kigh-yah).  Yet another NO that was ignored.  And I’m not too unhappy about this really.  Kya is our newest family member.

Chickie brought Kya home about a week ago.  She is a cutie.  Cassidy is playing the long-suffering uncle with her…..

He is generally good natured – and surprisingly tolerant of Kya.  He even lets her eat out of HIS food dish.  She runs around behind him just as fast as her short little legs can go as they skitter and slide all out of control on our wood floors.  He bounces all over the house like a kangaroo……and bounces on her at times as well.  She is learning to hunker down until Cyclone Cassidy passes by.  Then she’s off like a storm chaser…

Back to school again……..my mind bounces around like Cassidy sometimes.  I backed up a step – because my darlings were having a bit of trouble with the "following directions" part of cooking and gave them all cookie MIXES to bake.  Simple.  3 ingredients" water, eggs, mix.  I then made them write down the answers to a series of questions about the mix.  Tricky questions like "What temperature do you bake the cookies at?"  "What are the required ingredients?" "How long should they cool?"  "Where should they be when cooling?"  That last one seemed to be a killer.  If I remember correctly, the back of the package says "Allow cookies to cool on cookie sheet for 1 minute before removing.  Cookies should be stored in an airtight container."

So, naturally, EVERY group told me that the cookies should be cooled in an airtight container.  They totally skipped over that ALLOW COOKIES TO COOL ON COOKIE SHEET FOR 1 MINUTE part.  AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH
HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Better go off and plan the week’s activities.  Reminds me of a movie I saw where some kid is getting paddled and he had to say "Thank you, sir.  May I have another?" every time he got whacked……

What does a cookie look like that has lasted through the cooling process? My crew, myself being the chief culprit, has never waiting being the first 20 second ‘will fry your finger’ period. Now that you are on directions, I simply must send Roo. The baggy pants, no prob, he’s afflicted with the ‘noarseatall’ gene. Big hugs!

maybe you should work on following instructions in things that don’t necessarily involve cooking, which would save you until you get some funds.

a cooking implement lesson? that would be cheap. no food involved. i know what you mean on the broker than broke part. seems to happen around here this part of the year. every year. i’m glad you came here and wrote. we (I) miss you when you don’t.

hmmmm. How old is your daughter? i thought she was like 16. Explain to me why you HAD to put on a birthday party for her boyfriend? Where were his parents? Looks like Chickie will have to get a job to afford her ways too. lol When Punk was little and my mom would tell her there was no money she would demand that mom “write a check then.” Don’t you hate teacher wages? r

Minds like steel sieves. Heh. I can identify. I’ll have to send my youngest down to you as a role model for your kids. She can cook pancakes from scratch (and has done so for the past four years–she’s 13), and helped me make 6 loaves of banana bread (from scratch). She’s becoming an accomplished cook. With a smile…

Ice cream in a baggie???? Please share. Remember those hot dogs rolled in a crescent roll thingies? Maybe making those would constitute cooking? LOL. As I recall, they are just about disgusting enough for a bunch of kids.

What a perfectly beautiful baby!! Do you ever have a cooking genius come through your class? I’m wondering if it’s like teaching lit, where once every 10 years or so you’d get someone with a gleam of intelligence in their eyes. Whom must we picket to get your funding released?

Second job? That would suck, knowing how much time you put in to your day job.

September 18, 2005

Does your school have internet or a library? Maybe you could assign the class to “find the recipies for a dinner” or a party. Or any event. They could be directed to find recipies that they could actually make and explain how they made the choices. Someone already mentioned the J-word for Chickie. I like the idea. When mine was a teen, I gave her the money for ‘basic’ clothes

meaning JCPenny, and told her if she wanted more she would have to earn the money. Funny, she started shopping at Salvation Army!

You’ve got some smart readers with good ideas. That baby is soooo sweet you make me want to break my “no more pets” rule. I want to adopt about a dozen Katrina victim dogs and I don’t even have a job! I’ll join the picket line for your funding. hugs…

When I took home economics in the late 60’s we had to make meal plans based on a budget. We all had great ideas until we went to the store after school and found out exactly how much everything cost. That’s when we learned practical lessons about realistic expectations. It’s also when we got creative about getting what we wanted on a budget. It works at school and at home. (Hint, hint, wink, wink)

Aw, the puppy is adorable. Why is it that spending money is the only thing that can cheer up one who is broke? It’s terrible that you don’t have funds for your class. Whoever is responsible for releasing the money should consider providing you with supplies from their own pocket.

*ears perk up* Ice cream in a baggie? How do you do that?!?!

September 18, 2005

I wish I had quizzes like that. :-p Then again, 6th grade was a very long time ago. I can’t believe (or maybe I can…) that your funding isn’t released yet!! What gives!? And I feel for you on the money issue. I had three jobs once. Ask me when I slept! *maniacal laughter* I hope that you can find something to help you out soon. And DOGGIES!! Both gorgeous!

September 18, 2005

What a cute puppy! Im glad you didnt cave on the shoes.

September 18, 2005

Why, of course it will work. They’ll be so stunned by the idea (and afraid of you) that they’ll really concentrate! I started a note on the Rosanne note and realized I have a whole entry for that. I’ll dedicate it to you!

September 18, 2005

hopefully you will get to teach that lesson and not be diverted due to rita. Path showed way south and texas and not here. I’m so extremely glad, we haven’t even gotten our town back together yet. We went to feed the ducks some wal* white bread somebody gave us, and i can’t eat w/o thinking insulin shots which i hate, and heard a Nawlins band playing on our bluffs. No storm here please storm god

September 18, 2005

*grin* yeah I completely agree, don’t worry when she starts earning her own money, she’ll learn the value of it then. I sure did, I became this stingy fellow after. Lol I really thought about what to buy instead of blindly spending everything and anything I had.

September 19, 2005

That pup os so utterly gorgeous she’s nearly as cute as a kitten! *smile* Count me in as one of the picket line to get your funding. Waiting six weeks or more is unbelievable!!! What on earth is the holdup?

September 19, 2005

Oh jeez, I’m so sorry to read about your funding problems. It’s not right. That little pup is adorable!

September 19, 2005
